There’s a lot of superhero content coming out right now, with Superman recently released and The Batman 2 on the way. Plus, Marvel has several films planned, including Avengers: Doomsday, Avengers: Secret War, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, one particular movie is generating buzz, and early test footage of its star has received exceptional reviews.

Next summer will see the release of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. Joining her is Jason Momoa as Lobo, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, and Emily Beecham as Alura. The film promises a unique take on the superhero genre, drawing inspiration from Westerns like John Wayne’s True Grit – the comic book it’s based on was directly inspired by that film. This means audiences can expect a story that’s a bit different from the typical superhero battle between good and evil, and it’s something to be excited about.

Supergirl Is The Breath Of Fresh Air The Genre Needs

Kara, the hero of Alcock’s story, is a far cry from typical superheroes. She’s a troubled young woman who’s been through a lot, and unlike her optimistic cousin Superman, she doesn’t rely on hope. The story follows Kara as she’s drawn into a dangerous quest for revenge alongside a young alien named Ruthye, whose father was murdered. This journey proves to be much more difficult than Kara expects. The comic this film is based on suggests a darker, more serious tone than we saw in Superman: Man of Tomorrow, which is a welcome change in a landscape filled with overly polished superhero movies.

The initial trailer dropped a few weeks ago, picking up after Supergirl’s brief appearance in Superman. It shows her arriving at the Fortress of Solitude, feeling rough, to find her dog, Krypto. We then see Kara looking exhausted at a bar, alone with just her dog and a single birthday candle. She jokingly declares to Krypto that twenty-three will be her best year yet, admitting it won’t be hard to improve on the past. Director James Gunn has emphasized that this Supergirl story will be different from typical superhero narratives. He describes it as an anti-hero story, explaining that Kara is carrying a lot of emotional weight and personal struggles, which sets her apart from Superman’s more established position in life.
