Wes Bentley, known for his role as Jamie Dutton in the popular Western drama Yellowstone—where he starred for five seasons alongside Kevin Costner—is starting a new television project. This marks his first new show since his time on Yellowstone.
Unlike his co-stars, Wes Bentley’s character, Jamie, wasn’t positioned for a new show after the end of Yellowstone season 5. Instead, Beth kills Jamie in the finale, seeking revenge for their father’s death. While Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, and Cole Hauser are all moving on to lead their own spinoffs, Bentley’s future on television was uncertain.
Wes Bentley is joining Ryan Murphy’s new FX series, The Shards, marking his first regular TV role in a while, according to Variety. He’ll play Terry, the father of Debbie, who is portrayed by Hayes Warner. Bentley joins previously announced cast members Evan Rachel Wood, Kaia Gerber, Graham Campbell, Igby Rigney, Homer Gere, and Warner in the series.
Based on Bret Easton Ellis’s novel and audiobook of the same name, The Shards is a fictionalized account of the author’s senior year of high school in 1981. The story blends autobiography with horror, focusing on Bret and his friends as they navigate a new student’s arrival while a serial killer terrorizes their town.
Ryan Murphy isn’t the only one bringing Bret Easton Ellis’s work to the screen. Luca Guadagnino, known for After the Hunt, will direct a fresh adaptation of Ellis’s famous 1991 novel, American Psycho. The book was previously made into a popular 2000 film starring Christian Bale, Jared Leto, and Reese Witherspoon, and also featured a serial killer set in the 1980s.
While his new role in The Shards shifts Bentley’s focus from the Dutton family drama of Yellowstone, it brings him back together with director Ryan Murphy. Bentley previously appeared in three seasons (4, 5, and 6) of Murphy’s American Horror Story, concluding in 2016. American Horror Story was his last television project before Yellowstone began in 2018, making this reunion with Murphy a natural next step following the Western’s ending.
