What a Twist! Ex-Tekken Boss Harada Opens New Studio Under Fatal Fury’s SNK

When Katsuhiro Harada, often called the creator of Tekken, announced he was leaving Bandai Namco last year, many wondered if he would continue working in the video game industry.

Okay, so I was wondering what Harada was up to next, and it’s amazing news! He’s started his own development studio called VS Studio, and get this – SNK, the creators of games like Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, and Samurai Shodown, are backing them! I’m so excited to see what they come up with!

It’s unclear what the developer is creating, but given the studio’s name, it’s likely to be a fighting game.

According to the official press release, Harada explains that VS Studio aims to ‘go beyond tradition, crafted to perfection’.

He explained that ‘VS’ in VS Studio has a rich meaning beyond just the initials. It originally stood for ‘Video game Soft,’ reflecting the company’s beginnings. But it also embodies a drive to push boundaries, like a ‘Versus’ mentality challenging the status quo. Over time, it’s come to represent ideas like ‘Visionary Standard,’ ‘Volition Shift,’ and ‘Vanguard Spirit’ – all concepts centered around innovation and taking on challenges.

Hey, we’re not going to argue with that!

Just to clarify, SNK doesn’t currently own Visual Studio. They are investing in the company with the goal of making it a subsidiary, likely after everything is fully operational.

It’s worth mentioning that in 2022, SNK was acquired by the Saudi Arabian government. Since then, the new owners have invested heavily in the company, revitalizing it with additions like the guest character Cristiano Ronaldo in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, and by sponsoring large-scale esports tournaments with substantial prize money.

It’s assumed that VS Studio will be handed some serious backing as well.

What are your thoughts on Harada’s new project? Do you think he can create something as successful as Tekken, or will Tekken remain his greatest achievement? Share your opinions in the comments!
