Tomb Raider, a hugely influential and beloved gaming franchise, has been in the works for several years, though details have been scarce. The series is famous for pioneering 3D action-adventure games and introducing Lara Croft, a strong and iconic female lead. Over the decades, Lara has evolved from a classic adventure hero to a resilient survivor shaped by dangerous expeditions. Beyond gaming, she’s become a major film star with three movies, and is now set to lead a new live-action TV series.
The Tomb Raider series is still popular, but fans are growing impatient. It’s been almost four years since a new game was announced, and while Crystal Dynamics confirmed in early 2022 that they were developing one using Unreal Engine 5, updates have been scarce. With the last major Tomb Raider game released in 2018, there’s a possibility it could be nearly a decade between installments by the time the next one arrives.
Everything We Know About the Next Tomb Raider

So, I’ve gathered everything we know about the new Tomb Raider game to give you a clear picture of what’s happening. Our first solid information came in the summer of 2022 when the PlayStation podcast, Sacred Symbols, accidentally shared scripts used for actor auditions. One script, for Lara Croft, indicated that Camilla Ludington likely won’t be returning to play her. It also showed that Lara is now a more experienced, mature, and accomplished adventurer, even looking to collaborate with people she’s inspired through her journeys.
The leak turned out to be genuine, confirmed when the game’s developers made Sacred Symbols remove an audio recording of the script. This is the most detail we’ve seen about the game so far. It appears Lara Croft will be portrayed as more composed and resilient, facing challenges with strength rather than being constantly burdened by inner turmoil.
I was so excited to hear later in the year that Amazon would be publishing the new Tomb Raider game! It makes a lot of sense, considering they’re also making a live-action TV series based on Tomb Raider. We don’t know yet if the game and the show will tie in together, but I’m hoping they do!

A new design for Lara Croft was unveiled in February 2024 with an online release of artwork. This version feels more like the classic Lara Croft fans remember, clearly distinguishing it from the more vulnerable and less experienced character portrayed in the recent “Survivor” trilogy. The design doesn’t appear to be based on any particular actress, suggesting the next Lara Croft might be played by someone less famous, or that the artwork will be updated to reflect the chosen actress’s appearance.
Reports surfaced in May 2024 suggesting the next Tomb Raider installment will take place in India. According to V Scooper, a source familiar with industry news, the game will feature a large, open world and allow players to travel using vehicles like motorcycles.
Like most Tomb Raider games, you’ll compete with enemies to find important artifacts and items. A recent leak suggests this new installment might also focus more on completing the game without killing anyone, which would be a change from the last three games where Lara Croft was very focused on combat. While the source of this information isn’t completely reliable, it’s still one of the more interesting leaks we’ve seen recently.
It’s been quiet for a while, but we’ve recently learned that the new Tomb Raider game is still being worked on, even with changes happening at Amazon Games. Crystal Dynamics, the game’s developer, recently laid off nearly 30 employees, likely because their other project, Perfect Dark, was cancelled. This is the third time this year, and the second time since Perfect Dark’s cancellation, that the studio has had layoffs, leaving the future of the next Tomb Raider uncertain.
When Can We Expect to See the Next Tomb Raider?

Considering the new Tomb Raider game likely started development in 2021 or 2022, a 2026 release seems plausible. However, with major games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, GTA 6, and Marvel’s Wolverine already planned for next fall, the studio might be better off delaying it to early 2027 if possible.
If the new Tomb Raider game is coming out next year, we might get a sneak peek at The Game Awards next month. Otherwise, it’s more probable we’ll see it for the first time next summer, perhaps at Summer Game Fest or during a PlayStation showcase.
Considering each game in the previous Tomb Raider trilogy took two to three years to make, a five-year development cycle for the next one seems realistic. If the rumors about an open-world design are true, it will likely take even longer. Assuming development is going smoothly, we can expect to see the new game revealed within the next year.
