Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 1-2
I’ve always been captivated by Darth Maul – he’s such a compelling and ultimately tragic villain. It’s been incredible to watch his story unfold beyond what seemed like a definitive end in The Phantom Menace back in 1999. After 27 years, I’m so excited we’re finally getting a deeper look into his dark past with Maul – Shadow Lord.
The new Shadow Lord series from Lucasfilm is finally showing us Darth Maul’s long-term strategy for the galaxy during the early days of the Empire. After his return in Clone Wars and his eventual defeat in Rebels, Shadow Lord fills in the missing pieces, revealing Maul’s original plans and likely explaining how they were ultimately undone by his former master.
This article explores what Darth Maul hoped to achieve during The Clone Wars, his current plans as shown in Maul – Shadow Lord, and how those plans differ from the goals of his former master, Darth Sidious. It details his efforts to regain what he’s lost and build something new.
During The Clone Wars, Maul Had The Shadow Collective
Darth Maul’s journey to regain his strength started soon after he was brought back to life in the Clone Wars animated series. His brother, Savage Opress, found him, and with the help of Mother Talzin and the Nightsisters of Dathomir, Maul recovered his sanity. He also received new, mechanical legs, replacing the spider-like body he’d constructed while living in exile on the junk planet Lotho Minor.
With Savage as his trainee, Maul focused on getting revenge. He and Savage navigated the galaxy’s criminal networks, forming an alliance with Pre Vizsla and the Mandalorian Death Watch. They then pressured several powerful criminal organizations—including Black Sun, the Pykes, and Crimson Dawn—to join their Shadow Collective. Though Maul tried to partner with the Hutt clans, Jabba and the other Hutt leaders refused to work with him.
Despite their questionable methods, the Shadow Collective orchestrated a takeover of Mandalore hoping to lure Obi-Wan Kenobi into a confrontation. After killing Pre Vizsla and seizing the Darksaber, Maul solidified his control, earning the support of the Death Watch. He also killed the Duchess of Mandalore, intentionally aiming to inflict pain on Kenobi.
When Kenobi got away, the Shadow Collective quickly collapsed, and Darth Sidious went to Mandalore. Seeing his former apprentice as a threat, Sidious killed Savage and captured Maul.
Despite escaping and appearing in the final episodes of The Clone Wars, the Shadow Collective effectively fell apart after Ahsoka Tano defeated and captured Maul before the events of Revenge of the Sith. In those episodes, Maul was attempting to lure Anakin Skywalker into a duel, hoping to kill him and alter the galaxy’s future—he’d had a vision that Anakin, as the Chosen One, would play a key role in his former master’s plans and wanted to prevent that.
Maul’s New “Grand Plan” Is Revealed In Shadow Lord
In Maul – Shadow Lord, the former Sith apprentice is rebuilding his life in secret within the Empire, learning from his mistakes and patiently waiting for the right moment to act.
After watching the first two episodes of Shadow Lord, it’s clear Darth Maul isn’t just wandering aimlessly. He has a plan, a big one! It seems to start with good old-fashioned revenge – he’s going after the criminal bosses who double-crossed him. But this isn’t just about settling scores; it’s a stepping stone. He’s rebuilding his power, and ultimately, it looks like he’s coming for Sidious… and eventually, Obi-Wan Kenobi. It’s a fascinating setup, and I’m eager to see how it unfolds.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really getting into how Darth Maul is pulling the strings on Janix. He’s not just causing trouble; he’s deliberately turning crime bosses against each other – it’s a massive power play! And it’s clear he’s looking for a new apprentice, as seen in Shadow Lord. It’s a classic Sith move – he knows he needs someone strong at his side if he ever wants to challenge his own master, just like we’ve seen happen throughout Star Wars history.
The Prequels Were The Fulfillment Of Darth Sidious’ Grand Plan
It will be incredibly interesting – and heartbreaking – to watch how Maul’s goals conflict with what Palpatine is trying to achieve. Palpatine, of course, has a larger plan, rooted in the Sith’s thousand-year quest for revenge.
For many years, Sidious secretly pulled the strings, carefully planning events from the shadows. As Palpatine, he skillfully controlled the Galactic Senate, created political problems, and presented himself as a reliable leader. This allowed him to gain increasing power throughout the Clone Wars. He secretly commanded both sides of the conflict, ultimately turning the Republic into his personal Galactic Empire.
Sidious’s manipulation of Anakin Skywalker, turning him into Darth Vader, ultimately led to the destruction of the Jedi Order, as shown in Revenge of the Sith.
Palpatine was a master strategist who thought many steps ahead. While Darth Maul is also clever, his burning desire for revenge often prevented him from being patient enough to see long-term plans succeed. We know how his story ends – defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine after years of letting anger control him. All the power and influence he’s currently trying to gain will ultimately be lost.
It will be really interesting to see how Maul becomes the character we know from Rebels, especially considering he doesn’t have much power at the start, and why that is. Shadow Lord seems to be showing us that this happened because Maul’s long-term plans conflicted with those of his former master, who has already achieved his goals.
While Maul’s plans are ultimately doomed to fail, the ride to that failure will be thrilling, and each episode of Shadow Lord promises plenty of excitement.
