Warner Bros. announced that the new film will be Hello Kitty’s first time appearing in a major movie theater. The story follows Hello Kitty and her friends on an adventure designed to entertain viewers of all ages. The project has been in the works for several years, and in 2019, New Line Cinema obtained the rights from Sanrio, the Japanese company that created Hello Kitty, marking the first time Sanrio has allowed its characters to be featured in a large-scale film.
Leo Matsuda, the director known for Disney’s Inner Workings, is heading up the new Hello Kitty movie. The screenplay is by Dana Fox, who wrote Wicked. Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo. is producing, having worked for almost ten years to get the rights from Sanrio’s founder, Shintaro Tsuji. Shelby Thomas is overseeing production for FlynnPictureCo., building on their work on the upcoming live-action Moana movie, set to release in July 2026.
Hello Kitty first appeared in 1974 and quickly became a hugely popular brand with products sold all over the world. Sanrio, the company behind Hello Kitty, also created themed cafes, amusement parks, and video games. They’ve introduced other beloved characters like My Melody, Gudetama, and Little Twin Stars, and fans are now wondering if these characters will be featured in a new movie.
Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema are creating an animated movie expected to be a major summer release in 2028.
