When Is Monarch Season 2 Set? How The Monsterverse’s New TV Show Fits Into Godzilla & Kong’s Timeline

Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters begins immediately after the events of Season 1, but some time has passed in the larger Monsterverse story. At the end of the first season, the main characters found themselves trapped in the Axis Mundi. Although their visit felt short to them, time flows differently within the Axis Mundi, which explained how they encountered Cate and Kentaro’s grandmother, Keiko, still alive and believing she’d only been there for a few months.

The storyline cleverly brought the characters together, and also allowed the show to move forward in time. The Season 1 finale subtly suggested that time was flowing differently on Earth. Although Lee stopped Keiko’s signal, Kentaro continued to receive it, setting the stage for a time jump in the Monsterverse series. Now, the big question is: how much time has passed for the heroes?

Monarch Season 2 Is (Mainly) Set Two Years After The First Season

The first season of Monarch begins in 2015, shortly after the battle with Godzilla – an event known as G-Day within the show’s story. G-Day was the catalyst for everything that happened in Season 1, and led the organization Monarch to reveal its existence to the public. The season finale saw the heroes entering the Axis Mundi, and they reappear two years later, placing the main story in 2017. This is two years before the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, when Ghidorah tried to become the alpha Titan.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 Features Flashbacks to 1957

The first season of Monarch jumped between 1952 and 1959, revealing the organization’s origins and introducing its original members – including Keiko, who eventually arrives in 2017 through the Axis Mundi. The second season also uses flashbacks, but focuses specifically on the year 1957. We see Billy and Keiko already as a couple, though hints of a connection between Keiko and Lee begin to appear. This subtly foreshadows a similar love triangle that will involve Keiko’s son in the future.

The first episode of Monarch Season 2 reveals a new Titan that the organization originally studied in 1957. This creature, resembling a kraken from famous stories, is still revered by tribes in Chile, though it hasn’t been sighted for around 200 years – roughly since the 1750s. This timeframe aligns with many of the oldest kraken legends, creating a compelling connection.
