James Gunn has clarified Supergirl’s place in the new DC Universe, giving fans a better understanding of how the upcoming movies will connect and unfold.
James Gunn talks about Supergirl’s timeline within DCU
I saw James Gunn answer a fan question on Threads about where the Supergirl movie fits into the new DC Universe timeline. The fan pointed out how Gunn wants the DCU to be like Star Wars, with stories happening at different points but not necessarily chronologically. They just wanted to know when Supergirl takes place, and Gunn simply replied that it’s set between the Superman movie and Man of Tomorrow.
This positions the Supergirl movie’s story between the two planned Superman films. The release dates support this order: Supergirl is set to come out on June 26, 2026, falling between Superman (2025) and the next Superman film, Man of Tomorrow (July 9, 2027).
Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the new series Supergirl stars Milly Alcock as the iconic character. However, this isn’t the hopeful Supergirl many know. This version of Kara is hardened and cynical, haunted by the loss of everyone she knew on the ruined planet Krypton.
The story centers around Kara, who is celebrating her 23rd birthday with a galactic trip and her dog, Krypto. When she meets a young woman named Ruthye Marye Knoll (played by Eve Ridley), Kara begins a determined and violent pursuit of revenge. Joining the adventure are Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem, the leader of a group of space pirates from the Yellow Hills, and Jason Momoa as Lobo, an alien bounty hunter.
James Gunn and Peter Safran have been leading the DC Universe since becoming co-CEOs in October 2022. Before taking on this leadership, Gunn had already worked on DC projects like the movie The Suicide Squad (2021) and the Peacemaker TV series.
The new Supergirl movie is scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, 2026, and will be one of the first films released as part of the first phase of the DC Universe, known as ‘Gods and Monsters’.
