When ‘The Testaments’ Releases on Hulu & Full Schedule

Following the success of Hulu’s popular show The Handmaid’s Tale, a new series called The Testaments will debut in spring 2026. Based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel of the same name, The Testaments features Chase Infiniti, known for their role in One Battle After Another, as Agnes MacKenzie. Agnes is a young woman growing up in Gilead, trying to understand her past and the circumstances that led to a life of forced service.

Alongside the story of Agnes, The Testaments also centers on a group of young women attending a special school for potential future wives. Like the impactful The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments will be released in a similar format as Agnes gradually uncovers the secrets of her past and how they connect to the larger story.

What is ‘The Testaments’ About?

Hulu’s The Testaments is a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, taking place fifteen years later. This dystopian drama follows a new group of young women sent to a special school to train them as future wives. The school is overseen by Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), a familiar character from the original series. The story centers on Agnes MacKenzie, who viewers will know as Hannah Bankole from The Handmaid’s Tale, as Lydia seeks out promising students for the academy.

Agnes is gradually recovering her memories and, in the process, becomes friends with Daisy, a Canadian teen whose family was affected by Gilead’s harsh rule. Together with Shunammite, a girl from a privileged background, Agnes and Daisy start a revolt against Gilead’s controlling system. At the same time, Aunt Lydia tries to halt Gilead’s social experiment, realizing her attempts to change the new students have failed.

‘The Testaments’ Will Follow a Similar Release Schedule as ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

As a big fan of The Handmaid’s Tale, I was sad to see it wrap up on Hulu in May 2025 after six seasons. Something interesting about how they released the show is that they’d usually start by dropping several episodes all at once, then switch to releasing one episode a week. If you followed it closely, you’d remember that seasons 1, 3, 4, and 6 all kicked off with three episodes landing on the same day. Seasons 2 and 5 were a little different though – they only released the first two episodes together at the start.

Following its usual pattern, Hulu plans to release The Testaments around the same time as previous seasons. Interestingly, the premiere will be exactly one year after the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale aired, creating a neat anniversary. The new season will also conclude a year after The Handmaid’s Tale finished its run.

The first three episodes of The Testaments will be available to stream on Hulu starting Wednesday, April 8, 2026. After that, new episodes will be released every Wednesday, with one episode dropping each week. The series has a total of 10 episodes and will conclude on May 27, 2026.

The first three episodes of The Testaments – “Precious Flower,” “Perfect Teeth,” and “Daisy” – were directed by Mike Barker, who also directed twelve episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale. He will also direct the final episode of the season, ensuring a consistent narrative style.

So, I just found out some cool details about the directing for this series! Episode 4, “Green Tea,” is helmed by Quyen Tran, who I know from her work on Sirens and The Pitt. They haven’t announced the titles for all the episodes yet, but I can tell you Tran also did Episode 5. Jet Wilkinson, who directed Ballard, took on episodes 6 and 7, and Shana Stein – remember The Hunting Party? – directed the final two episodes, 8 and 9. Pretty solid lineup of directors, if you ask me!
