Where Are Resident Evil’s Main Heroes Today?

Okay, so Resident Evil always seemed like a scary story about a company messing with stuff they shouldn’t, creating bioweapons and not caring who got hurt. But playing through the games, especially thinking about Raccoon City and everything that happened afterward, I’ve noticed something else. It’s not just about the horror; it’s about how people actually survive all that chaos. It’s amazing to see how resilient folks are, even when everything’s falling apart around them. That’s a big part of what keeps me coming back to these games, honestly.

Over the years, we’ve encountered many memorable characters, each with their own brave story and unique viewpoint within the franchise’s history. We’re revisiting some key figures from the past and exploring how they impact the current narrative.

SPOILERS BELOW!

So, why this approach? It all comes down to the emotional core of each character’s story. We want to demonstrate that in the world of Resident Evil, surviving the horror doesn’t mean leaving it behind – the trauma stays with you for a long time.

Let’s dive in!

Familiar Faces With Varying Trajectories

These characters have all faced terrifying encounters with BOWs, leaving them traumatized. Despite this, they each have personal reasons for either pushing forward or trying to move on. While their motivations differ, they all share a common strength: a refusal to be defeated by fear or feel powerless, a trait that has helped them survive throughout their journeys.

For these characters, surviving wasn’t the finish line—it marked the start of a new story. We’ll explore their role in the larger story and what happened to them last within the series.

Chris Redfield – The Soldier and Mentor

Let’s start with Chris Redfield, a familiar face in the Resident Evil series, most recently seen in Village. By that point, he’d dedicated much of his life to battling bioweapons, and his latest opponent was Miranda.

He’s currently mentoring Rose Winters, feeling responsible for her father, Ethan Winters’, death. As leader of the BSAA’s Wolf Hound Squad, he’s training Rose to join their ranks, though she keeps her unique abilities hidden. By the end of Resident Evil Requiem, it seems he’s still actively pursuing the Connections.

Jill Valentine – The Quintessential Survivor

Following her captivity and mind control at the hands of Wesker in Resident Evil 5, Jill Valentine remained committed to destroying bioweapons. She underwent thorough recovery before Chris and Burton, a long-time friend and the BSAA’s director, welcomed her back into the organization.

Her final assignment sent her to Alcatraz Island in San Francisco, where she teamed up with Chris and Claire to stop Dylan Blake, a terrorist who held a grudge against groups working with Bio-Organic Weapons. She successfully eliminated the threat, and was relieved to feel like herself again, happy to be working with the BSAA once more.

Leon S. Kennedy – A Supercop With Secrets

After surviving a horrific first day as a police officer in Raccoon City, Leon was forced to work with the DSO, joining forces with Chris, Claire, Jill, and eventually Rebecca Chambers. Though he didn’t initially choose to fight bio-weapons, he’s now dedicated to preventing anyone else from experiencing the same trauma he did.

He was involved in the events at Alcatraz, teaming up with Jill to discover what really happened. He even helped Chris by distracting Blake’s mutated form, allowing her to defeat it. This leads into the story of Requiem, where his investigation of the Wrenwood murders takes him to the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center to question Victor Gideon, just before everything falls apart. During this, both he and Sherry become infected with the Raccoon City Syndrome, but they are ultimately cured. By the end of Requiem, Leon manages to defeat Victor Gideon and stop his plans.

Claire Redfield – An Empath Through and Through

Claire, Chris’s sister, has often found herself following his lead, especially during his investigations into the Umbrella Corporation, which have taken him to Europe. She’s grown a lot since she first teamed up with Leon and now works with TerraSave, a group dedicated to helping people affected by bio-terrorism.

Claire was last seen with other actors from the series on the set of Alcatraz, happily chatting with her on-screen brother, Leon, and Jill after they finished filming a fight scene with David Blake.

Ada Wong – Deadly and Devious

Ada and Leon frequently cross paths, often appearing wherever the other is. Though they don’t always share the same goals, Ada frequently assists Leon, proving to be a valuable asset to his investigations. However, she always seems to have her own hidden agenda. While generally cynical, Ada occasionally reveals a more caring side to her personality.

Wong was last seen looking into a copy of herself – a former assistant of Derek Simmons who he betrayed and transformed into a perfect duplicate. Working with Leon, she aimed to defeat Simmons and the fake Wong, and destroy the lab where the cloning research was conducted. After that, she moved on to a new, currently undisclosed job. Fans are hoping her work will eventually cross paths with Leon’s investigation again in Requiem, but that hasn’t been confirmed.

Rebecca Chambers – Brains Over Brawn

Chambers is a really intriguing character. She seems like this super smart academic, but she’s actually a surprisingly capable field operative – I remember seeing that when she investigated the Ecliptic Express and Spencer Mansion. Later on, she ended up consulting for the BSAA, helping their agents with her research and tackling the Bio-Organic Weapons threat in her own unique way. She wasn’t out there fighting directly all the time, but her work was crucial.

She last appeared at Alcatraz, playing a key role in stopping David Blake. She cleverly reprogrammed his drones – originally meant to release a dangerous virus – to disable his mutated form, giving the team time to finish him off. Afterwards, she celebrated their win with the rest of the group before they were safely evacuated.

Sherry Birkin – Devoted to the Cause

Sherry Birkin, the daughter of William Birkin and infected with the G-virus, spent years in protective care after Raccoon City was destroyed. During this time, her ability to heal quickly, caused by the virus, led to her being experimented on by people like Derek Simmons. After Albert Wesker died, she was released and began working at the DSO, which she welcomed, having witnessed the terrible consequences of bio-terrorism firsthand.

She last appeared in Resident Evil 6, attempting to rescue Jake Muller, Albert Wesker’s son, from Dr. Carla Radames. After eliminating Radames and Simmons, and getting Jake to donate blood for a C-virus vaccine, Birkin continued working for the DSO, now alongside Leon. Like Birkin, she was also infected in Requiem but was ultimately cured.

Barry Burton – A Father and Friend

Barry’s past connection with Chris would prove valuable, providing STARS and the BSAA with his skills in weaponry and combat. But balancing his dedication to fighting bio-terrorism with his responsibilities as a father created a constant internal struggle, which reached its peak in Revelations 2.

We last saw him during the game, where his pursuit of the kidnapped Moira brought him face-to-face with Alex Wekser. Afterwards, he seemed happy and content with his daughters, and he remained friends with Claire, even after rescuing her and Moira. He’s probably still working with the BSAA.

Carlos Oliveira – A Rare Survivor

Carlos and Jill teamed up to escape the destruction of Raccoon City, facing many challenges along the way. Despite being part of the UBCS, Carlos didn’t hesitate to help Jill, a former STARS member. He showed courage and remained calm under pressure, skills he’d developed as a trained heavy weapons specialist and a versatile soldier.

He was last spotted in Mexico after fleeing the United States, and he blamed the Umbrella Corporation for the hardships he’d endured because of their actions.

HUNK – The Insane Warrior

HUNK is a mysterious figure in the Resident Evil series. After his events in RE2, he took on a mission for Umbrella that led him to Alfred Ashford, the commander of a secret base. HUNK was immediately wary of Ashford, finding his secretive behavior suspicious.

Following the downfall of the Umbrella Corporation, Hunk became a highly skilled and renowned mercenary, creating a unique fighting style called Close Quarters Quarantined Battle Zone, along with specialized equipment to support it. He battles Leon in Resident Evil Requiem and appears to be defeated, but clues suggest he might have survived.

Ethan Winters – More Than Just A Memory

Though Ethan Winters seemingly died a hero in Biohazard and Village, a piece of his mind lived on inside his daughter, Rose, until she needed guidance to defeat Miranda. He ultimately assists her, transferring his remaining strength so she can overcome Eveline.

Honestly, I’m not sure if that piece of him actually survived everything that happened, but it really seems like he’s gone for good this time. It’s good to see Rose finally at peace with her abilities, and she seems to be remembering the good times they shared, which is nice.

Characters That Go Beyond Their Stories

One of the best things about the Resident Evil series is how its heroes aren’t just characters—they represent the hope for overcoming a deadly virus. They prove that surviving isn’t just possible, but can lead to even bigger accomplishments, ultimately saving others from the same fate.

Ultimately, the effectiveness of any effort to prevent bio-terrorism depends on the people involved. Unfortunately, too many individuals with questionable motives have undermined the positive work of those genuinely dedicated to this goal.
