If you’re trying to buy an NVIDIA RTX 5090 this week, you’ll likely be disappointed. This top-of-the-line graphics card, offering the best performance available for gamers and creators, is currently very hard to find at major US retailers.
The powerful RTX 5090 graphics card launched in January 2025 with a suggested price of $1,999. For a while, it was typically selling between $2,000 and $3,000, depending on the specific card. Although prices were higher than the original suggestion throughout 2025, those prices now appear quite fair.
I tried all morning to find evidence against the high GPU prices by checking major retailers online, but it’s no use. Amazon, for example, has cards listed between $3,800 and $4,500, and even then you might end up with a used one.
It’s impossible to find an RTX 5090 at Best Buy right now. Newegg’s prices aren’t great, and Amazon isn’t much better. To make things worse, the RTX 5090s that *are* available aren’t being sold directly by retailers like Newegg or Amazon; they’re being offered by third-party sellers through those platforms.
Micro Center is the exception, still selling the 5090 at a somewhat better price. However, the catch is that they only offer in-store pickup – shipping isn’t available – and they have very limited stock nationwide.
So, that begs the question: Where have all the 5090s gone?
Last December, I reported on rumors that NVIDIA might reduce production of its GeForce RTX graphics cards by as much as 40% in early 2026. This potential decrease is linked to a worldwide shortage of memory chips, which is happening because AI companies are securing large amounts of DRAM years ahead of time to support their data centers.
The rumors definitely caused people to quickly buy up the last available RTX 5090 cards, making the shortage even more severe. Now that the RTX 5090 is selling out and stores aren’t getting more, the problem seems bigger than originally thought.
You might as well buy an entire pre-built PC with a 5090 inside

The PC market is really unstable right now, and you can see that clearly by looking at the huge price differences between buying an NVIDIA RTX 5090 graphics card on its own versus buying a complete computer that already includes one.
Newegg’s ABS brand is currently offering a pre-built gaming PC, the Kaze II Aqua, for $4,899.99. Plus, there’s an additional 5% discount available, bringing the price down by $245. This PC is equipped with a powerful Intel Core Ultra 9 285K processor, an MSI Ventus RTX 5090 graphics card, and 32GB of high-speed T-Force Delta RGB DDR5-6400MHz RAM (which normally costs $530 on its own). It also includes a fast 2TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, a 360mm all-in-one liquid cooler, and a 1050W power supply.
You’re getting a great deal right now, but I don’t think these prices will last if it’s true that the RTX 5090 is having production problems.
If you live in the US and already have an NVIDIA account (created before January 30, 2025), you can enter NVIDIA’s Verified Priority Access program. This program is like a lottery for the chance to buy the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 Founders Edition graphics cards at the suggested retail price. It’s a good idea to sign up if you haven’t been able to get one of these high-end cards yet.
