Understanding where the Maul – Shadow Lord series fits into the Star Wars timeline is simpler than you might think. Many fans are surprised to learn that Darth Maul didn’t die at the end of The Phantom Menace. George Lucas continued his story in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Maul survived for much of the Empire’s rule, ultimately meeting his end in a fantastic episode of Star Wars Rebels called “Twin Suns,” which takes place just before A New Hope.
The series Maul – Shadow Lord takes place after the events of Revenge of the Sith, but Lucasfilm hasn’t been specific about exactly when. However, by looking at the trailers – not just the first two episodes – it becomes clear the show is set surprisingly close in time to the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
Maul – Shadow Lord Is Set Roughly a Year After Revenge of the Sith
Lucasfilm says the series Maul – Shadow Lord takes place a few years after the events of Order 66, as the Empire is beginning to grow. However, other Star Wars shows set around the same time give us a more specific timeframe. The Bad Batch, for instance, showed the start of Project War-Mantle, the initiative to replace clone troopers with stormtroopers. Since the Shadow Lord trailers include stormtroopers, we know the show happens after this project has already begun.
The ‘War-Mantle’ project began a year after the events of Revenge of the Sith. Interestingly, details about it also suggest a conclusion for the Maul storyline. Recent trailers reveal Darth Maul fighting two Inquisitors under Darth Vader. One, Marrok, is the Inquisitor who will be brought back to life by Morgan Elsbeth in the Ahsoka Disney+ series. The other will be killed by Ahsoka in Tales of the Jedi. It seems this Inquisitor outlives Maul, but quickly faces an even greater threat.
This Inquisitor is a bit of a mystery – Star Wars hasn’t firmly established whether he’s the Sixth or Eleventh Brother. However, official sources, specifically the Star Wars Timelines book, place his encounter with Ahsoka about a year after Order 66. This confrontation leads Ahsoka to rejoin the fight, becoming a key operative, known as Fulcrum, for the growing rebellion. Based on this, we know that Season 1 of Maul – Shadow Lord takes place a few months after Revenge of the Sith, but no more than a year later.
