Warning: Spoilers ahead for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 1.
The Hedge Knight kicks off a new chapter in the world of Game of Thrones, titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This series explores a different era in Westeros’s history and features characters from George R.R. Martin’s original stories.
As Ser Dunk and his squire, Egg, enjoy the tournament at Ashford, they meet many people who are ancestors of famous families from Game of Thrones – including lords, ladies, knights, and other squires.
The prequel also gives more attention to some of the less prominent families featured in the popular books, notably giving House Fossoway a bigger part to play in the story.
Though we’ve seen House Fossoway – loyal to House Tyrell of Highgarden – briefly in Game of Thrones, mostly through Symun Fossoway, several members of the family will be more prominent in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Here’s everything you need to know about Raymun and Steffon Fossoway!
Who are Raymun and Steffon Fossoway in A Knight of Seven Kingdoms?
Ser Steffon Fossoway is a knight and the future head of House Fossoway, which is based at Cider Hall. Raymun is his younger cousin and serves as his squire.
Steffon, similar to Ser Dunk, is participating in the jousting tournament at Ashford, which Lord Ashford is holding to celebrate his daughter’s thirteenth birthday.
I first saw Ser Steffon and Raymun Fossoway practicing for the tournament, and right away, I could tell something wasn’t right. Steffon was really rough with Raymun, constantly pushing him hard. It wasn’t just competitive – he was actually being cruel, even kicking Raymun into the barriers and breaking them! It was clear Steffon didn’t treat his cousin with any respect.
Raymun tried to fight back, but Ser Steffon effortlessly knocked him down with a single blow. “Don’t waste my time, Raymun,” Steffon taunted. “You’re worthless.”

Watching with worry, Dunk hesitated about getting involved, but Ser Steffon spotted his size and sword and challenged him to a duel. Raymun chimed in, urging Dunk to accept, saying, “Go ahead, Ser. I could be wrong, but this man is truly awful. Teach him a lesson.”
It’s obvious the two men dislike each other intensely. Later that night, Dunk runs into Raymun, who shockingly reveals that his cousin regularly injures the training men – breaking their hands or knees – as a way to gain an advantage if he ever faces them in a tournament.
Raymun and Dunk quickly become friends, and Raymun invites Dunk to share a meal with Ser Lyonel Baratheon, nicknamed ‘Laughing Storm.’ This helps the somewhat clumsy knight gain another important supporter.
Who plays Raymun and Steffon Fossoway in A Knight of Seven Kingdoms?

Edward Ashley and Shaun Thomas, both English actors, portray Ser Steffon Fossoway and Raymun Fossoway, respectively.
Ashley has played a number of memorable characters in film and TV, such as William in “Last Tango in Halifax,” William Gibson in “The Terror,” and Major Jack Kidd in “Masters of the Air.”
As a real cinema fan, I’ve noticed Shaun Thomas popping up in some really interesting films lately. I remember him from Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, and he was also great in How to Have Sex. I’ve also seen his name attached to The Choral and The Selfish Giant, which shows he’s been consistently working on some cool projects.
I’ve been following this actor for a while, and it’s no surprise they’re getting recognition now. They’ve already won some fantastic awards – I remember being really impressed when they took home Best British Newcomer at the London Film Festival, and then Best Supporting Actor at the BIFA awards too. It’s great to see talent like that being celebrated.
What happens to Raymun and Steffon Fossoway in the novella?
Revealing too much about what happens in the book would spoil the experience for readers, but it’s fair to say that the characters’ choices make the Ashford tournament legendary.
A major event also deeply affects House Fossoway, causing a long-simmering conflict between cousins to explode and permanently divide the family.
This led to the creation of a new family line, the Green Apple Fossoways of New Barrel, separating from the established Red Apple Fossoways of Cider Hall. They also have different symbols and flags, easily identified by their different colors.
A private disagreement grows into a major event that forever changes the story of House Fossoway. The conflict determines the House’s path forward and establishes the cousins as distinct figures with a shared origin.
The new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will debut on Sky Atlantic and NOW on January 19, 2026, and will also be available on HBO in the United States.
