Who Defeats Homelander in The Boys Series Finale: 5 Final Candidates, Ranked (Kimiko Isn’t #1)

After seven years and five seasons, The Boys is wrapping up with its final episode. The series has seen many heroes and villains meet violent ends, and characters have switched sides. Now, everything comes down to a final confrontation with Homelander, who seems more powerful and ruthless than ever due to a special compound in his blood and a growing belief in his own godlike status. With Frenchie’s recent death in episode 7 of season 5, the tension is at an all-time high in this superhero saga.

While it’s still within the realm of possibility that Homelander could win in the end, it feels unlikely. Though a victory for him would be a surprising twist on the usual superhero story, it wouldn’t feel satisfying after so much time invested by fans. There’s already concern about how The Boys will end, and it shouldn’t be because Homelander isn’t defeated. The real question is who will defeat him. Several characters could play a part, but I believe it will ultimately come down to five main contenders.

5) Marie Moreau

The recently cancelled show Gen V focused on Marie Moreau’s journey to become as powerful as Homelander. Both characters were the sole survivors of Vought’s Project Odessa, which aimed to create incredibly powerful Supes. Marie’s ability to control blood is exceptional, and she was even considered a potential savior. She proved her strength by surviving a laser attack from Homelander in the first season of the show.

As a huge fan of The Boys, I was really intrigued by Marie, thinking she might finally be a match for Homelander. But the latest episode kind of downplayed her powers, with her even saying they’ve been hyped up, and Starlight adding she doesn’t seem to fully control them. Honestly, it feels unlikely the show would end with a character from the spin-off – someone we’ve only seen briefly – taking down the biggest villain. While I still think her abilities could be important, maybe even used to mess with Homelander’s blood, I don’t see her being the one to ultimately defeat him. It just doesn’t feel like that’s where the story is going.

4) Soldier Boy

Soldier Boy initially seemed to be helping the good guys when he gave Homelander the V-One, motivated by his feelings for Clara Vought, also known as Stormfront. But episode 7 revealed a complication: his deep-seated hatred for his son. This leads him to try and escape, but he’s quickly subdued and put back into cryo-sleep. Given that Soldier Boy has a prequel series planned, it’s unlikely he’ll be frozen for the entire series finale of The Boys.

He’ll almost certainly be kicked out of the chamber again, and when that happens, he’ll likely be furious with Homelander once more. He has the power to neutralize Homelander, and might finally decide to use it. However, after a season of indecision, and the show establishing Kimiko with the same ability, it feels less probable that they’ll actually go down that path. Honestly, with Soldier Boy, anything could happen at this point.

3) Kimiko

Kimiko has become the most significant threat to Homelander. After Frenchie and Sister Sage gave her the power to neutralize other Supes using uranium, and fueled by grief over Frenchie’s death, she’s incredibly dangerous. Combined with her healing abilities, she’s now as powerful as anyone and a key player going into the final confrontation.

While Kimiko’s newfound abilities are exciting, the way they were introduced suggests they won’t be enough to permanently defeat Homelander. It feels too simple for the show to present his weakness in one episode and have it fully resolved the next, especially with more twists likely coming in the finale. Her powers will probably weaken him, but not eliminate his abilities completely, leaving the fight far from over.

2) Billy Butcher

The conflict between Butcher and Homelander has been the central focus of The Boys all along. Given how important Butcher has been as an opposing force, it seems unlikely the show would avoid ending with him facing off against Homelander. Not having Butcher kill Homelander would be similar to Game of Thrones not having Jon Snow defeat the Night King – it would feel like a predictable choice. Considering the show has generally steered clear of predictable outcomes, that makes some sense, even though a predictable ending isn’t necessarily a bad one.

However, I also suspect The Boys might deliberately subvert expectations with a really clever, unexpected turn of events. It would actually make sense for Butcher to be the one to deliver the final blow, especially if he’s weakened beforehand – it fits with the show’s overall themes. I don’t think Butcher will survive, but a joint sacrifice between him and whoever he’s facing would be a fitting end.

1) Ryan Butcher

At the end of episode 3 in Season 5 of The Boys, Homelander nearly killed Ryan Butcher, and he’s been missing ever since. Though we know he survived, his current condition and location are unknown. This strongly suggests he’ll reappear in the final episode to fight Homelander, but it remains to be seen if his abilities will be strong enough to win this time.

While he managed to injure Homelander, he was thoroughly defeated. The idea of him returning stronger and winning next time is a familiar story, but it feels like the most probable path for The Boys. It’s not as straightforward as focusing on Billy Butcher, and it creates a more personal conflict with Homelander than characters like Kimiko or Marie, giving him a slight advantage going into the final episode.

The Boys‘ series finale will release on May 20th on Prime Video.
