Warning! This article includes spoilers for Invincible season 4 and the comics.
Each season of Invincible introduces increasingly challenging villains for Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), and season 5 will be no different. While the Viltrumites have been the show’s primary antagonists for the first four seasons, they’re now coexisting with humans, meaning Mark will confront a new enemy in the upcoming season. It’s a tough task, though, as it’s difficult to imagine a villain who could match the Viltrumites’ incredible power.
After the fight with the Viltrumites, the young hero will keep battling enemies such as Powerplex (Aaron Paul) and Universa (Danai Gurira). Based on the Invincible comics by Robert Kirkman, Mark will also confront Dinosaurus (Matthew Rhys), a villain first seen in season four. But the storyline involving Dinosaurus will be unlike anything previously depicted.
What Will Happen Between Mark And Dinosaurus In Invincible Season 5?
As a huge fan of the series, I was really intrigued by the Death of Everyone storyline. It all started with Mark genuinely believing that even villains deserve a second chance – especially after he forgave Universa. This led him to do something pretty shocking: he broke Dinosaurus out of prison, hoping to team up with him. But Cecil, who’s always the voice of reason, was seriously disappointed and warned Mark that Dinosaurus was a lost cause and wouldn’t change his ways. It’s a really interesting dynamic and makes you question Mark’s judgment!
Initially, Invincible and Dinosaurus appear to be a successful team. However, Dinosaurus soon reverts to his destructive behavior, believing that wiping out half of humanity is the only way to ensure its survival, and ends up killing thousands. This forces Mark to battle someone he’d started to trust as an ally.
The animated series Invincible often brings villains back for multiple appearances, and Dinosaurus will likely follow that pattern. It will be fascinating to see how Mark responds to this new foe, especially considering his disapproval when Cecil brought D.A. Sinclair (Ezra Miller) onto the Global Defense Agency team.
Dinosaurus, one of the villains in Invincible season 4, doesn’t initially appear very dangerous. He’s a scientist with extreme views about humanity’s impact on the planet. The new season needs to demonstrate Dinosaurus’ power and establish why he deserves to be the primary antagonist following Thragg.
Thragg And The Viltrumite Army Will Return In Invincible Season 5
The fourth season of Invincible concludes with an uneasy truce between Mark and Thragg. Thragg and the Viltrumites will remain on Earth, intending to interbreed with humans to rebuild their declining population after the devastating purge and the Scourge virus. Mark reluctantly accepts the situation, doing what he believes is best, but this peace between him and the Viltrumites is likely temporary.
Nolan, like Thragg, secretly lived among humans with similar goals, and even he couldn’t control his violent impulses – despite being weaker than the Grand Regent. Given his nature, Thragg likely won’t remain hidden for long. He firmly believes Viltrumites are superior, so living among a species he considers inferior won’t satisfy him permanently.
Lee Pace, who voices Thragg, recently told ScreenRant that he’ll be back for the fifth season of the show. While it’s confirmed he’s returning, it’s still unknown whether the Viltrumites will invade Earth or wait until their numbers grow. The Viltrumites can’t simply vanish from the story, even if the show focuses on other villains. Ultimately, Thragg and his army are the core antagonists of both the series and the original comic books, and other threats are secondary.
There’s a possibility that season 5 of Invincible will explore a controversial storyline from the comic books involving Anissa, a Viltrumite character. In the comics, Anissa assaults Mark, and they later have a child. However, this event happens much later in the comic book timeline than where the show currently is. The showrunners have already deviated from the source material in significant ways, so they might choose to introduce this difficult plot point earlier in season 5.
