Ashley Biden, the daughter of ex-president Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden, is embarking on a new journey in life. She recently filed for divorce from her husband, Dr. Howard Krein, in Philadelphia on August 11, as per court records online.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Ashley shared an Instagram Story of herself walking through a park with a thumbs-up while Beyoncé’s song “Freedom” played.
Ashley and Howard first met in 2010 under unexpected circumstances. It wasn’t a romantic encounter as one might expect, but rather a coincidental, though bittersweet, meeting at the hospital after Ashley’s older brother, Beau Biden, suffered a stroke.
In a conversation with Politico in 2014, the 46th president recalled, “When Ashley walked into the room panicked about her brother and jumped into bed with him asking, ‘Beau, are you okay honey?’, this man was at the foot of the bed visiting. After everything was over, Howard approached Beau and asked, ‘Beau, do you think you could set me up with your sister?’
However, when Beau (who tragically passed away in 2015 following his fight against brain cancer) proposed that Ashley go out with Howard on a date, she declined the invitation. As the 82-year-old explained further, “She said, ‘No, Beau. I’m not interested in going on a blind date. I won’t do it under any circumstances.’ He pleaded, ‘Please, Beau, for me, could you just give it a try?’ To which she agreed, saying, ‘Alright, alright.’ Upon asking what she thought of Howard, she replied, ‘Well, he seems alright.’
In 2011, Ashley and Howard went from being more than friends to fiancés, and the following year, they became husband and wife.
In her speech at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, the 44-year-old revealed that her wedding reception took place in her parents’ backyard. At the time, her father was serving as vice president, but he also played a hands-on role in setting up the entire event. He was seen driving around on his John Deere four-wheeler, adjusting table settings and arranging plants. Interestingly enough, it was their roles that were reversed when it came to emotions. While she expected herself to be emotional, it was her father who shed tears and needed comfort.
At the age of 30, Joe Biden tragically lost his first wife Neilia Hunter Biden and their 13-month-old daughter Naomi in a car accident in 1972. As a result, the newly elected Senator Biden shifted his focus towards raising his sons Beau and Hunter, temporarily setting aside romantic pursuits.
Frank Biden gave him Jill Jacobs’ phone number a few years ago, and that was when he first used the stove, not before.
In his 2007 memoir, Promises to Keep, Joe expressed that finding love anew with the future first lady restored his life. He began to believe that his family could once more be complete.
Joe and Jill married on June 17, 1977.
The president often refers to his late son, Beau Biden III , a former Army major and two-term Delaware attorney general who passed away from glioblastoma in 2015 at the age of 46.
In a conversation with the New York Times following the publication of his 2017 memoir, “Promise Me, Dad,” Joe shared that Beau lived by a strong personal code of honor. While this might seem unconventional, he emphasized its authenticity. His father had a saying, “Never explain and never complain.” Remarkably, not once did Beau express any complaints.
On a night near the end of Beau’s life, as Joe explained, his son confronted his own mortality. He observed me dealing with the loss of his mother and sister. He didn’t want me to withdraw or abandon the vitality of life. Instead, he encouraged me not to retreat inward.
During his heartfelt tribute for his late brother, Hunter reminisced about his initial recollection of Beau. This memory was from the hospital in 1972, where they found themselves together following the tragic car accident that claimed their mother and sister’s lives.
As I stood before the National Guard/Army Reserve center that bears my son’s name on the eve of my inauguration in January 2020, I couldn’t help but feel an immense sense of pride for hailing from the great state of Delaware.
In my role here at the Major Beau Biden facility, I feel an immense sense of pride. To add to that, it’s truly a privilege to be carrying out this work. Now, let me share a personal sentiment – I wish he were here with us. It would have been an honor to present him as our president.
In the year 2002, Beau tied the knot with Hallie Biden (originally known as Olivere). Their union brought forth a daughter named Natalie Naomi Biden in 2004 and a son, Robert Hunter Biden II, in 2006.
In 2016, Joe ultimately chose not to run for president following the passing of his son Beau. However, prior to giving any thought to the presidency, Joe sought advice from his daughter Hallie, as reported by Delaware’s News Journal. Ron Olivere, Hallie’s father, made this disclosure.
“Her response,” Ron said, “was, ‘Pop, we’re behind you all the way. We’re behind you 100 percent.'”
Natalie, at the age of 10 following her father’s passing, expressed on TODAY before her grandfather’s inauguration in January 2020 that Thanksgiving is likely everyone’s preferred holiday. She explained, “Since we often visit Nantucket… Maisy and I, my grandpa, my uncle, and even my dad used to participate in a Polar Bear plunge there in November.
In the year 2023, she completed her education at St. Andrew’s School, a location where parts of “Dead Poets Society” were filmed, situated in Middletown, Delaware. Subsequently, she chose to attend the University of Pennsylvania, an institution that holds a special place in her father’s alma mater.
Natalie attended a May 2024 State Dinner for the president of Kenya with date Rafael Hajjar.
Hunter, the son of Beau and Hallie who shares his name with an uncle and is known by that name, tends to keep his personal life low-key, yet he has made appearances at significant family milestones such as inaugurations.
In March 2020, during a townhall on CNN hosted by Anderson Cooper, Joe mentioned that Beau’s children resided close to him and Jill in Delaware. With social distancing being the norm then, they would converse from their back porch while the kids sat on the lawn with chairs nearby, discussing their daily life, school closure, and who was causing each other annoyance.
In 2021, the president and his wife were present at Saint Joseph on the Brandywine, a church they have been frequenting for a long time, for their grandson’s confirmation ceremony.
Robert Hunter Biden, who was born on February 4, 1970, is a graduate of Yale Law School. He has openly discussed his battles with substance abuse and various personal challenges in his life.
In June 2024, it was determined that he had committed three felonies: lying twice about his drug use on a federal background check form for obtaining a firearm, and possessing a gun while addicted to or using illegal drugs. Prior to his father’s pardon in December, he was facing up to 25 years in prison for these offenses due to their being felonies.
Hunter also pled guilty to tax-avoidance charges in September.
2020 saw Hunter largely missing out on his father’s political campaign events, amidst a wave of unfavorable news reports.
Or simply:
In 2020, Hunter rarely attended his father’s campaign events due to a flurry of negative headlines.
As a loyal follower, I’ve been by Beau’s side since our journey together began during his first political campaign, when we were both carried in baskets. We traversed everywhere alongside him, from the grandest events marking his political career to the smallest gatherings related to it. I’ve never missed a rally for my father. The thought of not being by his side in Philadelphia, beside the iconic Rocky statue, is deeply saddening to me. It’s tearing us both apart. My father implores, “Be here,” and my mother urges, “Be here.” However, I question the price we must pay for this presence.
During the Democratic National Convention in August 2020, Hunter (who had spoken remotely at that time) was present in person for President-elect’s victory speech in Wilmington on November 7.
And despite his troubles, Hunter remains one of the president’s closest advisors.
In 1993, the individual who graduated from Yale Law School tied the knot with Kathleen Buhle. Together, they have three children: Naomi King Biden (born on December 23, 1993), Finnegan Biden (born on September 9, 2000), and Maisy Biden (born in 2001).
In 2015, the couple parted ways, with Kathleen listing drug abuse and infidelity as some of her husband’s issues in her subsequent divorce paperwork.
In my capacity as a lifestyle advisor, allow me to share a personal revelation: I found myself in a meaningful bond with the widow of my late brother. As we navigated the complexities of our situation during challenging times, it became evident to those closest to us that our connection was more than just friendship – it was love. In a statement released to Page Six in March 2017, I expressed our good fortune at finding each other and the unwavering support we’ve received from family and friends throughout our journey.
The oldest child of the Hunter completed their undergraduate studies at Penn University, followed by enrollment at Columbia Law School. Presently, they hold the position of an associate at Arnold & Porter.
Incidentally, Naomi and Tiffany Trump went to Penn University. Interestingly, both Donald Trump (who later became president) and Joe Biden were present at their graduation in 2016. Furthermore, Tiffany posted a picture on social media showing her and Naomi spending time together in the Hamptons during the summer of 2018.
Naomi mentioned that her grandfather, who held the position of vice president for two terms under President Barack Obama, could be reached by any of his grandchildren at any given moment, regardless of location.
She shared on PBS Newshour in August 2020 that when he was speaking on stage, he would receive a call and respond, “What’s the issue?” or simply “What’s up?
For a short period prior to their November 19, 2022, wedding held on the South Lawn, Naomi and now-spouse Peter Neal resided with her grandparents at the White House, preparing for their nuptials.
After her wedding, Naomi mentioned to Vogue that she often reminds herself it’s the White House, but with time, it becomes commonplace.
Naomi told Vogue after her wedding that she sometimes has to remind herself that she’s in the White House, but eventually, it feels like everyday life.
On election day Nov. 5, Naomi announced she and her husband were expecting their first child.
Hunter and Kathleen decided to honor his father’s mother by naming their second child Catherine Eugenia, who they affectionately call “Jean,” as her middle name.
In the year 2021, she completed her studies at the University of Pennsylvania and has since been a consistent presence at several notable events, both in Washington D.C. and overseas. One such event was in April 2023, where she joined grandma Jill to attend the coronation ceremony for King Charles III.
At the graduation ceremony of Penn in 2023, the President and First Lady were present as they watched Hunter and Kathleen’s youngest child receive their diploma.
Although Finnigan’s sister keeps her Instagram account private, you can explore Maisie’s artworks and peek into different aspects of her life on her publicly accessible profile instead.
At her grandfather’s inauguration, she was seen wearing a well-organized suit consisting of a dark jacket and pants, complemented by Air Jordans. At the October 2023 White House State Dinner for the Australian prime minister, she opted for a Brooks Brothers pinstripe suit.
Back in May 2019, Hunter tied the knot with Melissa Cohen, a filmmaker from South Africa, during a rooftop wedding in Los Angeles following several weeks of courtship.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share this heartwarming tale I stumbled upon in the New Yorker! In the blink of an eye, just days following their first enchanting date, Hunter got the word “shalom” – which means hello, goodbye, and peace in Hebrew – tattooed on the inside of his left bicep, mirroring Melissa’s own ink. A few days later, on May 15, he popped the question! What a romantic gesture!
The following day, she agreed, so he arranged for wedding rings, as well as a marriage ceremony, which was facilitated by an officiant who was sent over.
Hunter shared with the magazine that he had recently gotten married, informing his father over a call. His father, who was on speakerphone, responded by expressing gratitude for giving him the confidence to love again. When Hunter told his father that he had never stopped loving, his father expressed his joy, saying he knew that when Hunter found love again, he would get him back. Hunter replied, saying, “Dad, I’ve always had love, and the only thing that allowed me to see it was your unwavering belief in me.
Hunter and Melissa welcomed son Joseph Robinette “Beau” Biden IV on March 28, 2020.
In 2019, Hunter Biden found himself facing a child support lawsuit from Lunden Alexis Roberts, who claimed that Hunter was the father of her daughter, Navy, who was born in August 2018.
Initially, he asserted that there was no sexual involvement with Lunden. However, by January 2020, an Arkansas judge had approved a paternity order following a DNA test, confirming him as the child’s biological father.
According to CNBC, the hunter ultimately consented to make a regular, unspecified payment as child support.
Recognizing that he now had seven grandchildren for the first time, the president expressed in a statement to People, “Our son Hunter and Navy’s mother, Lunden, are making efforts to cultivate a relationship that prioritizes their daughter’s well-being, while respecting her privacy moving forward.
As a deeply concerned grandfather, I emphasized that this isn’t about politics; it’s a personal family concern. My dear wife, Jill, and I are united in our heartfelt desire to ensure the best possible future for all our grandchildren, including Navy.
On June 9, 1981, Joe and his partner Jill Biden were delighted to welcome their sole offspring, Ashley Blazer Biden, into the world.
In 2010, a graduate from Tulane earned her Master’s degree in Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Policy and Practice. Since then, she has served as the Associate Director at the Delaware Center for Justice for over seven years.
In the year 2017, Ashley established a clothing label named Livelihood. The logo of this brand features the letters ‘LH’ intersected by an arrow, symbolizing her late brother Beau. This design serves as a touching homage to him.
Ashley shared with The Lily in June 2020 that sometimes we need a strong push downwards to propel ourselves forward. She described him as her bow; his cancer made her weak and brought her close to giving up, but the only way she could move on was by pushing forward, persisting, and continuing to pursue her own aspirations.
Joe expressed deep admiration for her when he spoke with TopMob News upon her debut at New York Fashion Week. He’s noted that she’s had a lifelong goal of changing the world, and he truly believes she will succeed in this endeavor.
Ashley shared with TODAY that she intends to employ her role as the first daughter to champion causes like social justice, mental health awareness, and community improvement and rejuvenation.
Regarding the harsh criticism aimed at her family, particularly her father and brother Hunter, she expressed to Elle in 2023, “The true strength lies in maintaining kindness despite the growing rudeness of the world.
She didn’t hold back from getting angry. Instead, she explained, “It’s only natural for anyone who deeply cares about someone to feel upset when they are being unfairly criticized or when false information is spread.
Through Beau, Ashley crossed paths with her spouse, Dr. Howard – a renowned plastic surgeon, professor in otolaryngology, and the chief medical officer at StartUp Health, a venture capital firm.
The doctor sought and received permission from his future father-in-law to propose. At sunset on a cliff in Big Sur, California, he asked Ashley for her hand in marriage. They got married in June 2012 in a combined Catholic and Jewish ceremony at the church in Delaware where she had been baptized. This church was also the venue for their wedding.
Joe shared with People before his daughter’s wedding that he couldn’t believe how fast the time had gone by, saying, “Oh my goodness, my little girl! It seems like just yesterday,” but also expressed confidence in the groom, stating, “He’s a great match. And he’s lucky to have such an exceptional woman.
Joe is the eldest among four siblings, and Valerie Biden Owens, his sister, has often been seen on the political campaigns that have marked his life. In truth, she has served as his most trusted political consultant for nearly five decades.
In a conversation with Axios following her brother’s victory in the 2020 election, she said, “Everyone knows him as an eloquent speaker,” but added, “Let me put it this way: Here’s Joe Biden, talking endlessly. However, my brother excels not just in speaking, but also in listening.
When asked about a name for him upon his presidency, Valerie replied, “I would call him Joey or simply Joe.” Alternatively, if he addresses me as ‘First Sister’, I plan to refer to him as ‘Mr. President’.
Naomi tweeted on October 22, 2020, during the final stretch of the presidential campaign: “To reach Joe Biden, one must pass us first…We may not seem imposing, but keep in mind, our grandmother is Dr. Jill Biden.
Later, she posted a picture of her eldest grandchildren embracing their grandfather, after learning about his election victory on November 7, 2020 in the morning.
