As a long-time viewer, I was really moved by a recent, special episode of EastEnders. It focused entirely on Nigel Bates – Paul Bradley, you know – and showed his heartbreaking struggle with young-onset dementia in the lead-up to Christmas. It was a really powerful and standalone story.
This version of the story is particularly sad and moving, as it brings back beloved characters who were previously believed to be gone forever.
Viewers have been enjoying a trip down memory lane with the return of familiar faces like Pat Evans (played by Pam St Clement), her step-son Barry (Shaun Williamson), and younger versions of Phil and Grant Mitchell (played by Daniel Delaney and Teddy Jay).

It was great to see Debbie Bates – played by Nicola Duffett – pop up in Nigel’s visions! I remember her last appearance way back in 1995, so it was a nice little nod to the show’s history.
Who is Debbie Bates in EastEnders?
Debbie, originally known as Tyler, lived on Albert Square for two years starting in 1993.

She arrived in town as a friend of Tracey, the popular barmaid (played by Jane Slaughter), and had relocated with her daughter, Clare (Gemma Bissix), to get away from her violent husband, Liam (Francis Magee).
Debbie quickly started a relationship with Nigel, but Liam was determined to cause them trouble. He even tried to sabotage their wedding, but Phil and Grant intervened, holding him captive in The Arches until the ceremony was over.
How did Debbie leave EastEnders?
Nigel adopted Clare, and things were good in his marriage with Debbie until she tragically died in a car accident. Afterwards, he had to fight for custody of Clare against a man named Liam who also wanted to raise her.

After a few years, Nigel met Julie Haye (Karen Henthorn), who became his teacher and stepmother, and the family relocated to Scotland.
Clare came back to Walford in 2008 and honored her mother by visiting her gravesite with Dot Branning (June Brown).
Earlier this year, Nigel planned to show younger versions of Debbie and Clare in a special episode about VE Day. These younger characters were played by actresses who weren’t given screen credit.
