With a new Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and the upcoming third season of House of the Dragon, it’s a great time to be a fantasy enthusiast!
The newest installment in the series is based on ‘The Hedge Knight,’ the first story featuring the popular characters Dunk and Egg. It introduces these beloved and unexpected heroes to a wider audience.
Whether HBO’s new show will be a hit largely depends on the two main actors and how well they play off each other. The relationship between the imposing knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his remarkably insightful young squire, nicknamed “Egg,” is especially touching.
In April 2024, the actors who will play the main characters in the second Game of Thrones prequel were announced. Former rugby player Peter Claffey will star as Ser Duncan the Tall, and Dexter Sol Ansell will play Egg.
After the announcement, George R.R. Martin, the co-creator, writer, and executive producer, shared his reaction on his popular blog, “Not a Blog.” He complimented the new actor, saying his auditions were “wonderful.”
He added that the young man is remarkably experienced for how old he is, and he’s apparently eager to commit fully – he can’t wait to shave his head! He believes Peter and Dexter will be a fantastic team.
Martin shared his positive reaction to the adaptation, saying he’s watched all six episodes—including early versions of the last two—and thoroughly enjoyed them. He’s a longtime fan of the characters Dunk and Egg, and he was particularly impressed with the actors chosen to play them.
Over ten years ago, Game of Thrones premiered on HBO and quickly gained a large and dedicated fanbase, also helping launch the careers of many young actors. Sophie Turner, who starred in the series, is now the lead in the new Tomb Raider project from Amazon MGM Studios, and Milly Alcock, a young star from the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, will play Supergirl in a DC film later this year. It’s likely this current pair of rising stars will see similar success.
Curious about the actor playing Egg in the new TV series? Here’s everything you need to know about the young star, including who he is and where you might recognize him from.
Who is Dexter Sol Ansell?
Dexter Sol Ansell is a rising British actor with a busy year ahead. He’s appearing in the new HBO series based on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and will also be in the film 500 Miles, alongside well-known actors like Bill Nighy, Clare Dunne, Roman Griffin Davis, and Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones.
He’s also part of a well-known family – his father is Jonathan Ansell, a singer who found fame on the show X-Factor, and his mother is Debbie King, who used to host the game show Quizmania.

Iona Ansell trained at the Mark Jermin performing arts school in Swansea, Wales. Mark Jermin, the school’s founder and director, shared his excitement after she was cast, saying it was inspiring to see her, along with other young actors like Cameron, Dexter, Alfie, and Aroop, succeed through hard work, professionalism, and dedication.
I’m incredibly proud of every single one of them. They truly embody the values we champion at Mark Jermin – skill, hard work, and passion.
How old is Dexter Sol Ansell?
This promising young athlete from Leeds was born in 2014, making him only 11 years old. This is around the same age as Isaac Hempstead-Wright was when he first played Bran Stark on Game of Thrones.
Art Parkinson, Maisie Williams, and Sophie Turner, who played the other Stark children, were very young when they began filming – just 9, 13, and 14 years old, respectively.

What has Dexter Sol Ansell previously starred in?
This rising star has already built a solid resume, starting with a role on the popular British soap opera Emmerdale in 2016. He played Carl Holliday, the son of Jimmy King.
I remember when they originally had someone else play the part, but then three years later, Miles Ansell came back to the show – this time as Lucas Taylor, the son of Dawn Taylor. He actually stayed with the show as Lucas all the way until 2021, which was great to see!

He subsequently appeared in several popular shows and films, including the Sky original series The Midwich Cuckoos with Keeley Hawes, the Channel 4 comedy Hullraisers, and the Netflix movie Christmas on Mistletoe Farm.
He’s become widely recognized for his starring role as young Coriolanus Snow in the 2023 film, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
Is Dexter Sol Ansell on social media?
Yes, the actor from Leeds is on Instagram and is currently using it to promote his new HBO show. He’s even shaved his head to look like his character!
As a huge fan of Westeros, I’m thrilled to share that “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is kicking off on January 19th on Sky and NOW! If you’re like me and loved “House of the Dragon”, both seasons are already available to stream on those platforms. If you’re not already subscribed, you can find out how to sign up for Sky TV to catch everything.
