Who is Dr Kay in Stranger Things season 5? Linda Hamilton character explained

Over its four seasons, Stranger Things has become known for featuring popular actors from the 1980s. From Sean Astin of The Goonies, who played the well-liked Bob Newby, to horror icon Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street) and Cary Elwes of The Princess Bride, the show plans to keep this tradition going in its next season.

The show is adding a major guest star for its fifth and final season: Linda Hamilton, the iconic sci-fi actress known for her role in Terminator. The creators, the Duffer Brothers, are aiming for a spectacular conclusion to the series with this exciting addition.

With the final season of the popular ’80s sci-fi series on Netflix, fans are wondering what role the mysterious Dr. Kay will play as the story returns to Hawkins and the terrifying Upside Down.

Here’s everything we know so far about Linda Hamilton’s mysterious Stranger Things character!

Who is Dr Kay in Stranger Things season 5?

Dr. Kay is a new government agent who seems to be taking over the investigation of the Upside Down in Hawkins, much like Dr. Martin Brenner did before his death near the end of season four.

Now that the town is under military lockdown and the search for Eleven is getting more urgent, Dr. Kay is emerging as a major new threat for Mike and his friends. She’s investigating the strange and growing chaos as the barrier between the real world and the Upside Down weakens.

Matt Duffer described the character as exceptionally smart and a bit scary. While she’s a scientist, she’s also capable of defending herself physically, even with a gun.

Based on the trailer for season 5, it looks like she’ll be helping the team. Although initially presented as a challenge, she seems to end up fighting alongside them against the main villain, Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).

The preview showed a thrilling action scene where government officials fight off hordes of Demogorgons in a massive, explosive battle.

In the midst of the battle, Hamilton is fighting with other soldiers, shooting at the dangerous creatures that have emerged from another universe.

The Duffer Brothers told Entertainment Weekly that the new character is unsettling and frightening because she lacks any emotional bond with Eleven.

Brenner possessed a fatherly side, but Dr. Kay lacks that nurturing instinct. She sees the subject solely as a tool to be obtained.

Looks like it’ll be Judgment Day for Eleven!

Who is Linda Hamilton?

Linda Hamilton, the well-known actress, is the newest addition to the popular Netflix series. Many will remember her from television and movies, especially for her famous portrayal of Sarah Connor in the Terminator films directed by James Cameron.

Linda Hamilton first played the role in 1984’s The Terminator, and became widely known for her performance in the popular sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), where her character underwent a significant change. She reprised the role 35 years later in the sixth film, Terminator: Dark Fate (2019), reuniting with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Hamilton reprised his role as the Terminator in the 2009 film Terminator Salvation and also featured in the T2-3D: Battle Across Time ride at Universal Studios theme parks.

Viewers who enjoyed the NBC show Chuck might remember Hamilton as Mary Bartowski, Chuck (Zachary Levi) and Ellie (Sarah Lancaster)’s mother. It was a surprise to learn she was actually a CIA agent – a perfect role for her!

Linda Hamilton, famous for her role saving the world in the Terminator movies, appears poised to do the same in Stranger Things. The latest, devastating events suggest a last-ditch effort to defeat Vecna.

How did the Duffer Brothers convince such a famous star to join the show? It seems she was already a big fan of the Netflix hit!

During the 2023 Netflix Tudum event, she admitted it’s tricky balancing being a fan of the show with also being an actress on it. She promised she’d work on finding that balance, and said she’d see everyone back in Hawkins.

With the fifth and final season arriving later this month, get ready for an emotional ride! Hopefully, this isn’t a permanent goodbye to Hawkins and its characters.
