Recent news about Avengers: Secret Wars shares the expected filming start date. While it’s later than originally anticipated for Avengers: Doomsday, that’s understandable given the current timeline. With the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps kicking off Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe this summer, the story is building towards Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled to conclude this phase in 2027.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has few confirmed movie releases right now. Currently, only Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 2026), Doomsday (December 2026), and Secret Wars (December 2027) are scheduled. It’s doubtful any other movies will come out in 2026 or 2027, as filming for them would need to start very soon.
Regarding confirmed Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, both Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday have finished filming. We recently learned that Avengers: Secret Wars will begin filming in Summer 2026. This is a bit later than Doomsday, which started filming this April, but there’s a simple reason for the difference.
Why Avengers: Secret Wars Will Start Filming Later Than Avengers: Doomsday
So, I heard that Avengers: Doomsday started shooting back in April with the idea of hitting theaters in May 2026. Honestly, that timeline felt pretty tight – just over a year for everything from filming to all the special effects and editing. But then Disney and Marvel threw us a curveball and pushed back the releases of both Doomsday and Secret Wars. Instead of May, we’re now looking at December for both films. It gives them a bit more breathing room, but it definitely changes the anticipation!
With the release of Avengers: Secret Wars pushed back from May to December 2027, it’s logical that filming will now begin later in 2026. This also explains why filming is starting after Doomsday. Depending on when in the summer of 2026 it gets underway, Secret Wars might even have a longer filming and editing schedule than Doomsday originally did.
Why Avengers: Doomsday & Avengers: Secret Wars Were Delayed
Since The Avengers came out in 2012, Marvel Studios typically released its biggest movies in late April or early May to kick off the summer blockbuster season. But after the recent Thunderbolts film didn’t do as well as hoped in that timeframe, Disney has decided to release the next Avengers movies in December instead. December has proven to be a more reliable time for big franchises like Avatar and Star Wars to succeed.
It’s still unclear if releasing Thunderbolts was the right decision. While the movie’s ending showed it was actually setting up a new Avengers team – now called the New Avengers – Marvel didn’t promote it as an Avengers film until after it came out. This makes it hard to say if releasing movies in April/May is no longer a good strategy for the MCU. However, December has consistently delivered blockbuster hits, so the shift in release timeframe likely won’t negatively impact Doomsday or Secret Wars.
The upcoming movie Avengers: Secret Wars is inspired by a Marvel Comics storyline, but many details about how it will translate to the big screen are still unknown. The first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday is coming next month, and hopefully, it will give us a better idea of what to expect from both Avengers films. We can anticipate learning more details once filming for Avengers: Secret Wars begins next summer.
