Galactus, a major villain from Marvel Comics, recently appeared in the movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Many fans were surprised by his size, as he appeared much smaller than typically portrayed. Actor Ralph Ineson, famous for his distinctive voice, plays Galactus in this live-action version. In the comics, Galactus is a cosmic being who consumes planets to survive, and is usually depicted as gigantic, but the movie presented a different scale for the character.
While the Galactus in The Fantastic Four: First Steps wasn’t exactly small, he was noticeably smaller than most fans anticipated and how he’s usually shown in Marvel comics. Even before the movie came out, his size, revealed in trailers, sparked debate. Interestingly, Galactus’ size changes throughout the film – he’s massive in space, but also able to walk on Earth – and this dynamic approach works really well for the story.
Galactus’ Size-Changing Ability Makes Sense For The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Some viewers expecting Galactus to be enormous enough to physically devour Earth in The Fantastic Four: First Steps might be surprised by his size. However, his fluctuating size actually fits the reboot’s storyline. Galactus isn’t trying to eat the Earth in this version; he’s searching for Franklin Richards, the newborn son of Reed and Sue Richards (played by Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby), who possesses incredible cosmic power.
When the Fantastic Four first encounter Galactus aboard his ship in First Steps, he appears much larger than when he arrives on Earth-828 and walks through New York City searching for Franklin Richards. This size variation reflects Galactus’s established ability to change his size in Marvel comics, a nod to his long history. Furthermore, the MCU version of Galactus doesn’t consume planets in the traditional way seen in the comics, meaning he doesn’t need to be as enormous as he’s sometimes portrayed.
In First Steps, Galactus destroys planets in a two-part process. First, he flies his massive ship, Taa II, directly through the planet, breaking it apart. Then, the ship collects the debris, melts it down into molten rock, and feeds it to Galactus through tubes on his back. Galactus could have easily destroyed Earth without needing to grow larger. His smaller size in The Fantastic Four: First Steps doesn’t make him any less frightening.
