Be warned, this article reveals major plot points from season 2, episode 4 of Landman. In the episode, Gallino (Andy Garcia) reaches an agreement with Cami (Demi Moore), but with a condition: he’ll only work with Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton). Since Monty’s death in season 1, most of the characters in Landman have been struggling to keep M-Tex afloat. Monty left behind some questionable business practices, and now M-Tex is responsible for fixing a damaged offshore gas rig – a repair that will cost a staggering $420 million.
In the fourth episode of Landman season 2, Cami asked Gallino for financial help to rebuild the offshore gas rig owned by M-Tex. Gallino, also known as Danny Morrell, had met Cami in the previous episode and persuaded her he’d be a good business partner. Despite initially appearing as though he intended to take advantage of Cami, Gallino ultimately decided he only wanted to work with Tommy – and this is the reason why.

Despite refusing direct negotiations with Cami, Gallino offered to assist both her and M-Tex. Cami had requested $350 million to fix the offshore rig. While Gallino didn’t commit to specific financial terms, he agreed to pay M-Tex and work out the details with Tommy. Essentially, Gallino is providing Cami with the funds she needs to repair the gas rig and prevent a potentially expensive legal battle.
It’s just so odd, beyond the fact that Gallino seems like a genuinely good investor. What really struck me was that he agreed to the deal, but flat-out refused to talk to Cami. He actually asked why she was negotiating instead of Tommy, and then, after some pretty strange talk about snakes, basically said he’d let them “figure it out.” What I gather is that he’s only willing to work out the details of this deal – this lifeline, really – with Tommy, and completely cut Cami out of the process. It’s a really bizarre situation, to be honest.
What Gallino’s Snake & Hawk Metaphor Really Means

Gallino explained his preference for working with Tommy over Cami using a veiled analogy. He described people as falling into three categories: snakes, hawks, and rabbits. He sees himself as a snake – a ruthless and morally flexible businessman who’s a tough negotiator. He operates with a certain code of honor and only partners with others who are equally formidable.
Gallino sees himself as cunning and dangerous, and Tommy as a powerful predator. Although Tommy isn’t as ruthless as Gallino, he’s willing to take advantage of others, which Gallino respects, seeing him as a formidable opponent. However, Gallino considers Cami inexperienced and lacking the aggressive strategies he and Tommy use. He believes negotiating with her would be too simple and wouldn’t feel like a fair fight, which is why he chose to work with Tommy instead.

Gallino sees Tommy as a real challenge not simply because he’s difficult, but because dealing with Cami would be deceptive. Cami is unaware of Gallino’s connections to the cartel and doesn’t even know his real name is not Dan Morrell – she’s missing crucial information about who she’s in business with. Tommy, on the other hand, fully understands Gallino’s background, and Gallino holds power over Tommy due to his investments in Cooper.
Gallino’s motives might run deeper than just business. Because Cami doesn’t know his true nature, he could easily cheat her out of a large sum of money. However, Tommy understands exactly who Gallino is, making it much harder for Gallino to exploit him in future dealings. Perhaps Gallino sees Tommy as a more worthy opponent, and enjoys the challenge of negotiating with someone who isn’t easily fooled. He might even view it as a more respectable way to do business – a fair fight, rather than taking advantage of someone unaware.
