Why Henry Cavill Already Missed Out On a Role in Apple TV’s Upcoming Fantasy Masterpiece Adaptation

Whenever a new fantasy series is announced, it’s almost guaranteed someone will suggest Henry Cavill for a major role – and it’s easy to see why, especially after his popular portrayal of Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. Cavill naturally fits the look of many classic fantasy heroes, and he clearly understands and appreciates fan communities. This explains why fans often want to see him in franchises like Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings. It also explains why he actively pursues roles like Superman and Geralt, and why he’s now involved as an actor and producer in a Warhammer 40,000 series.

With Apple TV now adapting a major fantasy series, Henry Cavill is frequently mentioned as a potential cast member. The company is prioritizing adaptations of Brandon Sanderson’s popular Cosmere novels, specifically Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive. While Sanderson has been working on bringing these stories to life for years, and Cavill had previously shown interest in one of the projects, the author has stated that Cavill is no longer suitable for that particular role. However, there’s still a chance he could appear in other parts of Apple’s fantasy world.

Brandon Sanderson Explained Why Henry Cavill Won’t Play Kaladin in The Stormlight Archive

In a 2024 Instagram interview shared by @cosmere_junkie, Brandon Sanderson discussed the possibility of Henry Cavill starring in The Stormlight Archive. Cavill had expressed interest in playing the lead character, Kaladin, but also recognized he might be too old for the role. Kaladin is in his twenties for much of the series, while Cavill is currently 43, which Sanderson cited as a reason why he wouldn’t be a good fit. Sanderson also explained that Kaladin is described as having Asian features, and that was another factor. As Sanderson recalled, Cavill even called him and said, “I’m too old for Kaladin, aren’t I?” and Sanderson replied, “Yes, and he’s also Asian.”

I’ve heard talk about who should play Kaladin in The Stormlight Archive adaptation, and it seems like timing might be key. This discussion probably happened before Apple officially picked up the series, but these casting concerns are still relevant. Because The Stormlight Archive is planned to be a huge 10-book story – potentially 10 seasons of TV! – they really need someone young enough to grow with the role. And it’s super important that they cast someone who accurately reflects Kaladin’s character, avoiding whitewashing. Thankfully, Brandon Sanderson seems dedicated to getting this right. It might disappoint fans hoping to see Henry Cavill as Kaladin, but maybe he could end up in another one of Sanderson’s projects down the line! There are so many stories to adapt, and I’d love to see him involved somehow.

Could Henry Cavill Still Appear in Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere?

Given his desire to play Kaladin, Cavill’s obviously a fan of The Stormlight Archive — and the actor clearly loves appearing in properties he already enjoys. Hopefully, that means he’d be game for another role in Apple TV’s Cosmere. Sanderson certainly seems open to working with him in some capacity. In the same interview, Sanderson recalled, “He was like, ‘Could I be in The Stormlight Archive, and I’m like, ‘Well, I’m sure we can find something.’ But he really kind of wanted to be Kaladin. He had read the books and just knew that it wouldn’t work, but it was kind of heartbreaking when he called me.

Sanderson believes he and Henry Cavill will likely work together someday, especially since they both share a passion for fantasy. While Cavill could potentially play a supporting character in The Stormlight Archive, Mistborn is another possibility – his age fits characters like Kelsier or Hammond better than Kaladin. However, it’s uncertain if Cavill’s schedule with Warhammer 40,000 will allow for additional projects. If not, there are still many other books within Sanderson’s Cosmere universe that Apple TV might adapt, offering future opportunities for Cavill to participate.
