33 Years Later, Classic Historical Action Anime Gets a New Release

The 1990s were a truly special time for anime, acting as a bridge between Japanese culture and fans around the world. This period was crucial in building the massive popularity anime enjoys today. Before streaming made it easy to access content, anime began captivating Western audiences and evolving into a global phenomenon. The animation style of the 90s was instantly recognizable and helped many series and films become hits. It’s been nearly 33 years since one of the most celebrated anime of all time, Ninja Scroll, first aired in Japan. The film was directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, a well-known director and co-founder of the prestigious Studio Madhouse.

The film gained international recognition for its compelling story and impressive animation. It recently returned to cinemas globally to celebrate its 30th anniversary, proving to be a huge success. In the U.S., Sentai and HIDIVE brought the film to over 500 theaters. AMC Networks has also confirmed a special screening will take place on February 15th at 10:00 pm CET during the 76th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale).

Sentai President Hypes The UpcomingĀ Ninja Scroll’sĀ World Premiere

According to John Ledford, President of Sentai, the new 4K version of Ninja Scroll is a beautifully restored and immersive experience. He says it looks so good, it’s like seeing the classic film for the first time with incredible clarity, contrast, and color.

After its premiere, the anime will have extra showings for those who attended on February 16th and 20th. A special 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook will also be released in early 2027. This new version has been remastered with improved color and clarity to enhance the viewing experience.

Ninja Scroll is among ten films chosen from nine countries to be shown at the festival. Notably, it’s the first anime ever included in the festival’s ‘classics’ selection – a significant achievement for the anime world! Screenings on February 15th and 22nd are sold out, but some tickets are still available for the event on February 16th. What IsĀ Ninja ScrollĀ About?

The story is set in feudal era Japan, following Jubei Kibagami, who wanders the country as a swordsman for hire. After being betrayed by those close to him, he has lost any patience for warring political factions and their treachery. However, his past comes back to haunt him when he saves a female ninja named Kagero from a man who could turn his body as hard as stone.

Kagero, the last remaining member of her ninja clan, is investigating a deadly plague that wiped out an entire village. She reluctantly teams up with Jubei, a skilled warrior forced into the conflict by a powerful group of supernatural ninjas called the Devils of Kimon. As they delve deeper into the mystery, Jubei discovers the link between the Devils and the plague, and unexpectedly comes face-to-face with someone from his past he’d hoped to avoid.
