James Marsden is reprising his role as Cyclops in the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday. It’s been a while since he last played the character – back in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) – as Tye Sheridan took over for the subsequent X-Men movies. A recent trailer for Avengers: Doomsday showed Marsden’s return, alongside Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Ian McKellen as Magneto, with Cyclops delivering a powerful optic blast at the end.
This teaser highlights Cyclops’ incredible power and suggests he’ll be a central figure in upcoming X-Men stories. Though Wolverine has often taken the lead in the movies, Cyclops is usually the team leader in the comics, and this hints at a return to that dynamic. While there’s talk of him appearing in Doomsday (though it’s not official), this footage suggests he’ll be key to the plot. He’s using his powers impressively, but he’s clearly distressed – visibly shaken and even screaming – which implies something deeply upsetting has happened. Considering some familiar faces are missing, could this mean several X-Men characters are in danger, even facing death?
Is Jean Grey Dead In Avengers: Doomsday? What About Other X-Men?
The trailer for Doomsday X-Men hints at a grim future, specifically involving the villain Doctor Doom. Even before the scene with Cyclops, we hear a foreboding voiceover about the certainty of death. Combined with images of widespread chaos, destruction, and Sentinels, it strongly suggests that some X-Men have died, which would explain Cyclops’ intense reaction. Cyclops is usually the team’s most level-headed and heroic member, and hesitant to use his full power. Seeing him act like this implies a significant event has occurred – though it could be a training exercise in the Danger Room, the sheer emotional weight of the scene suggests otherwise.
The most likely way to explain the intense reaction would be the death of Jean Grey, who is Scott’s love interest. This seems especially probable because Famke Janssen, who played her, isn’t in the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, and hasn’t expressed much interest in returning, though that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Other original X-Men cast members like Anna Paquin (Rogue), Halle Berry (Storm), and Shawn Ashmore (Iceman) are also absent, and their characters could have met similar fates.
The presence of Sentinels suggests Doctor Doom might be behind the recent troubles. He appears to be attacking various worlds and hero teams, possibly connected to larger dimensional issues. Eliminating several X-Men would establish him as a powerful villain and motivate the survivors to fight back. However, this explanation feels a bit too straightforward, especially for a preview intended to mislead viewers. We’ll have to wait until December to find out what’s really making Cyclops so angry.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on December 18th, 2026.
