Why Julia Louis-Dreyfus Felt Pressured to Share Past Cancer Diagnosis

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is reflecting on a tough decision.

Eight years after publicly sharing her breast cancer diagnosis in 2017, the actress from Seinfeld revealed she felt pressured to go public with her health struggles.

Julia, 64, explained on the December 9th episode of Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast that she felt pressured into a situation. She admitted she usually keeps to herself, but the unexpected year-long shutdown of her show, Veep, forced her to go public. She needed to address the situation because around 250 people would have been out of work.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, known for her role as Selina Meyer in the HBO comedy Veep, began cancer treatment when the show temporarily stopped filming. A year later, after a double mastectomy and six rounds of chemotherapy, she announced that her cancer was in remission.

Although Julia was reluctant to talk about her diagnosis initially, she realized that sharing it ultimately helped her heal.

She recalled a surprisingly positive experience after her breast cancer journey: people started reaching out to her for support and advice, and she found she was able to help them. It was incredibly comforting to be on the other side of the trauma and offer that support, and she realized that helping others was a powerful way to heal herself.

Julia was thankful for her friends’ visits while she was undergoing chemotherapy. She fondly remembered how they cheered her up by playfully teasing her about her cold cap, which she used to try and prevent hair loss.

The comedian jokingly recalled being crammed into a small room while feeling very disoriented. He described wearing a large, oddly-shaped turban and being playfully teased by those around him, calling the whole experience like a dream.

Now that her cancer has been in remission for several years, she’s grateful for the support she received from her close friends, including many celebrities and her colleagues from the show Veep.

She described it as a powerful reminder of hope during a difficult time, telling USA Today in 2019 that knowing there was light at the end of the tunnel was incredibly encouraging. She also felt grateful to be able to earn a living doing something she loved.

She admitted that she would have happily worked on the project without pay, simply because she enjoyed it so much. She felt it was a really positive experience that helped her through a difficult time.
