June Squibb won’t be riding a motorized scooter into retirement anytime soon.
At the impressive age of 95, June’s acting career is experiencing a remarkable resurgence. She will make her debut as the leading actress in the film “Thelma” in 2024, and later this year on September 26, she will take on the title role in “Eleanor the Great,” starring alongside Scarlett Johansson.
If she were to retire, as she expressed to Francesca Amiker at Eleanor’s North American premiere at TIFF on September 8, “I’d likely become quite restless if I weren’t busy.
Instead, June won’t be retiring but rather aiming for another significant achievement in her career. Beginning in December, the actress from Nebraska will take on the role of Marjorie Prime in the play “Marjorie Prime” on Broadway.
She shared that her background was in theater, having spent many years there, before venturing into films. It wasn’t until she was in her sixties that she began acting in films.
She added, “In a sense, it feels like returning home. Plus, the script is fantastic, and the duration isn’t extensive.
However, prior to starting on the upcoming project, June is relishing the sight of her efforts on Eleanor the Great, a film that marks Scarlett’s debut as a feature director, being successfully completed.
June enthusiastically expressed that she truly enjoyed herself, attributing it to the wonderful actors she collaborated with. In particular, she was impressed by Scarlett’s leadership skills, stating that she made the entire experience effortless and enjoyable.
For Scarlett, the experience of working on the film, centering around Eleanor who relocates to New York City at 90 and befriends a 19-year-old college student, was just as remarkable as well.
Reflecting on my experiences, I can’t help but cherish so many delightful memories from being on set,” said the former Avengers actor. “The film is exceptionally touching and demands some profoundly emotional performances from its actors. Amidst all this intensity, we often found ourselves laughing to prevent tears. As a result, we were constantly in fits of laughter.
Scarlett continued, “So just being with my friends and making this movie, every day was wonderful.”
