Why Mandalorian & Grogu Has Din Djarin Remove His Helmet Again Addressed By Jon Favreau And Pedro Pascal

In the upcoming Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, Pedro Pascal’s face will be visible more often, and both the director and Pascal himself say this is intentional.

A central theme of The Mandalorian has always been Din Djarin’s strong connection to his Mandalorian beliefs and the challenges he faces balancing those beliefs with his care for Grogu. Throughout seasons 1 and 2, moments where Din Djarin removed his helmet highlighted his developing bond with Grogu, ultimately leading to his journey in season 3 where he seeks to make amends for actions he perceived as wrong on Mandalore.

The trailers for The Mandalorian & Grogu are different from previous seasons, showing Pedro Pascal’s face frequently – a big change considering his character’s masked identity in The Mandalorian season 3. While moving to a theatrical release allowed for bolder creative choices, the team didn’t make this decision casually. Director Jon Favreau explained to Empire, “How do we make this work without going against everything we’ve established about the Mandalorian culture?”

Pedro Pascal explained that he and Jon Favreau always had a single, specific story reason for Din Djarin to remove his helmet after his experience with the Living Waters on Mandalore. Pascal described a conversation with Favreau about the story, saying, “When we reached that moment, it felt completely right and was exactly the reason I’d been hoping for.”

I was so captivated by the story, and especially curious about why Din Djarin would ever take off his helmet. The actor didn’t reveal exactly what happened in the story to lead to that decision, but he was completely on board with where the writers took things. He said it was like his own thoughts made real – he’d been thinking about the only logical explanation, and the script delivered it perfectly! He immediately told Jon, the writer, that it was exactly what he’d been hoping for, and honestly, I felt the same way when I saw it!

After a seven-year gap and the mixed reception to The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm is hoping The Mandalorian and Grogu will be a hit. The new season takes place during a chaotic time for the New Republic, with the remnants of the Empire lurking and threatening the galaxy. Din and Grogu will face their most difficult adventures yet as they continue working as bounty hunters.

Pedro Pascal had a more hands-on, physical role in The Mandalorian and Grogu, sharing the responsibility of wearing the Mandalorian armor with stunt doubles Lateef Crowder and Brendan Wayne. Fortunately, his work on Gladiator II had prepared him for the demanding action sequences. According to Jon Favreau, who spoke with Empire, “He’s a very physical actor, so we asked more of him than ever before, especially in scenes without the helmet.”

Showing Din Djarin’s face is a significant moment for the story of The Mandalorian. If he’s willing to compromise his beliefs again – likely to protect Grogu – viewers can expect a thrilling and emotionally charged season of The Mandalorian and Grogu.

The Mandalorian and Grogu will release exclusively in cinemas on May 22, 2026.
