Masters of the Universe Was Always a Hard Sell
Let me be upfront: I’m a huge fan of Masters of the Universe. It was a big part of my childhood – I vividly remember pretending to be He-Man, sword in hand, on my way to school! Last year, I was lucky enough to visit the set of the new show, and it completely blew me away. I even got to hold the Sword of Power while standing inside Castle Grayskull, and walked through a forest designed to look like Eternia, coming home with dirt on my shoes. That experience is easily one of the highlights of my career.
However, there’s a problem: a movie can’t succeed by only appealing to men around 40 who fondly remember dreaming of becoming superheroes. Sadly, according to Deadline, that’s exactly what happened. Here’s what they reported after the movie’s opening weekend:
Okay, so I was really excited for the new movie, and it’s cool Amazon and Mattel wanted a new generation to enjoy it. But honestly, looking at who actually went to see it last night was a little surprising. It wasn’t the kids’ movie I expected! Most of the audience was definitely older – people over 35 made up a huge 57%, and even more – 36% – were folks over 45 who probably grew up watching the original cartoon. It was also a very male-dominated crowd, with about 68% being guys, and dads were way more likely to be there than moms. The few kids who did go were mostly boys – 82% boys versus only 18% girls. It seems like this movie was really made for those of us who remember the 80s cartoon!
Essentially, Masters of the Universe appeals to a very specific and limited audience, making it unlikely to attract widespread interest. While other franchises from the 1980s have successfully reinvented themselves with regular new releases, Masters of the Universe hasn’t managed to do that. This movie relies heavily on nostalgia and targets a small group of dedicated fans, who have shown up in force early on, meaning its box office numbers will likely drop off quickly.
Nostalgia Has Diminishing Returns

However, there’s a larger issue Hollywood is currently facing. While nostalgia and established franchises have driven pop culture since 2008, things have shifted significantly in the last five years. Marvel movies aren’t performing as well as they used to, and now only major superhero events are consistently attracting audiences. Disney+ saw limited success reviving Star Wars, with shows like The Mandalorian potentially losing money. Star Trek has ended a long run of new series, with no replacements planned, and even the annual Doctor Who Christmas special was cancelled, leaving the future of this iconic sci-fi show uncertain.
Recently, we’ve seen a rise in successful original movies and standalone films. I started noticing this in 2023, with Christopher Nolan suggesting Oppenheimer might signal a shift away from relying solely on franchises. Since then, films like Sinners, Weapons, and Project Hail Mary have reinforced that idea. Franchises aren’t disappearing, but they no longer guarantee success. Audiences now seem to crave something new and original. Even though I’m a fan of classics like Masters of the Universe, I recognize that a reboot isn’t always the answer.
What Does This Mean For Masters of the Universe?

How does this film impact Amazon’s future? Kevin Wilson, head of domestic distribution for Amazon MGM, was positive about the opening weekend, praising director Travis Knight and the team for creating something special. He believes the strong start proves their approach to releasing films – building excitement that will continue even after it leaves theaters. Essentially, Amazon sees this movie as a worthwhile investment with long-term potential.
Amazon is looking beyond traditional box office numbers to measure success. They’re focused on how much people rent or stream the movie, how well related merchandise sells, and other ways the film generates revenue – which have always been key to profitability. Even though Masters of the Universe appeals to a specific audience, that group has significant spending power. Plus, Amazon hopes new projects like the upcoming YouTube TV show will introduce the franchise to new fans. While this doesn’t guarantee a She-Ra sequel, it means the film’s box office performance isn’t the final word on the future of Masters of the Universe.
