Why Shawn Johnson & Andrew East Have a Plastic Surgeon On-Call

There’s no doubt parenting has been a wild ride for Shawn Johnson East and Andrew East

Although both the Olympic gymnast and the former NFL player, both age 34, are used to injuries from their athletic careers, they were surprised at how quickly their four-year-old son, Jett, would rush into risky situations.

Shawn told TopMob News that when their children were little, Andrew would often show them videos on YouTube to help them discover new interests. They’d explore everything from sports and hobbies to activities like piano, crafts, cooking, and science, hoping something would spark their kids’ enthusiasm. Shawn mentioned that their oldest son, Jett, showed a particular fascination with anything with wheels from a very young age – even as early as one year old.

Now it’s not uncommon to see Jett cruise around the Special Forces stars’ new Nashville-area spread.

Andrew explained that he often sees his son walking around the yard with his eyes closed and arms outstretched. When Andrew asks what he’s doing, his son replies that he’s pretending to ride a motorcycle.

Andrew mentioned he’s always been naturally interested and passionate about it, but things haven’t always been easy.

Shawn joked that having a plastic surgeon as a neighbor is like having an emergency room at your fingertips. He said that when you reach the point of patching people up in your living room, it suggests you’ve become a bit too accepting of something that really needs attention.

As for their preschooler, he “just doesn’t care anymore either,” she noted, “which is crazy.”

It’s so heartwarming to watch their youngest, Bear, just love playing any sport with a ball! I’ve heard Andrew say he’s often out in the backyard, happily dragging his bat around and practicing his swing with the tee. It’s such a simple, sweet thing to see, and honestly, it just seems like pure fun!

And for Drew, it’s the climb.

Shawn told us his daughter is really into rock climbing, and it’s completely changed her. He described her as usually quiet and thoughtful, but when she’s climbing, she becomes energetic and full of life.

Watching her climb almost anything, Andrew exclaimed, “She’s getting so strong!”

But that’s not the only thing she’s been good at recently. She’s also been cutting up balloons to make clothes for her Barbies. Her dad, Shawn, says she’s like a little fashion designer, and he’s amazed at where she learned that skill.

The stick-to-itiveness, however, is definitely an East family trait.

Having experienced the hard work it takes to excel, the authors were motivated to write their new book, The Courage to Commit: Embrace the Radical Power of Sticking with Something. As Shawn explained, they observed a current trend where people prioritize keeping their choices open rather than fully committing to one path.

Shawn explained that because she spent her childhood happily training at the gym, she believes commitment is key to finding true joy and satisfaction in life.

Although achieving four Olympic medals by age 16 required a lot of dedication and missed social events, Shawn Johnson doesn’t regret a single one.

She acknowledged her upbringing was different from most, but emphasized it was a path she willingly took. She felt fulfilled and didn’t believe she missed out on important experiences, as she had plenty of her own.

She fell just as quickly into a committed relationship with Andrew. They moved in together in Nashville only two months after their first date, which had ended with a memorable kiss right on the 50-yard line of Vanderbilt University’s football stadium.

Shawn described their early days of dating long-distance as feeling wonderful, and Camila wasn’t very fulfilled by her work or life in Los Angeles at the time.

She decided to take a chance. “I figured I had nothing to lose,” she explained. She remembered thinking, “If it doesn’t work out with him, that’s okay. I can always move and try again.”

Reader, they committed

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always said love isn’t static – it evolves. And that’s exactly what Shawn from the Couple Things podcast shared as they celebrated their 10th anniversary. He admitted that looking back on their wedding day, he thought their love was already at its peak! But what’s been so incredible to witness – and what he’s realized – is that love actually deepens with time, through everything life throws your way. Every challenge overcome, every hurdle cleared… it all contributes to a richer, more profound connection. It’s truly beautiful to see a love that continues to grow year after year.

The proof is in their sweet family photos.

Shawn and Andrew appear with their third baby, son Bear, in December 2023.

The former NFL player already has a sweet connection with baby No. 3.
