Why Sister Wives’ Janelle Brown Contemplated Going Back to Kody Brown

Sister Wives star Janelle Brown would like to forgive Kody Brown—and then forget about taking him back.

While apologizing to his second wife for how their 2022 divorce played out, the 56-year-old briefly wondered if her ex-husband might be seeking a new relationship.

Okay, so I was totally glued to the latest episode, and Janelle just said the most interesting thing! Apparently, even after everything – you know, her split from Kody – she had a moment where she wondered if they could’ve fixed things! She said it just… happened, like one of those thoughts you have when you’re talking to someone you used to be with. I mean, can you believe it? Even after all the drama with Meri and Christine, she still considered it! I’m completely obsessed with hearing all the details!

But she wasn’t exactly racing to dust off her claddagh ring.

When Janelle’s friend wondered if Kody might be seeking another wife to add to his marriage with Robyn Brown, Janelle didn’t think that was likely.

The mother of six shared that he constantly talks about how much he loves Robyn, calling her his ‘true love’ and so on. She said she just responds by saying, ‘That’s nice, you two can be together.’

Because the North Carolina transplant has found something even more valuable: closure.

For Janelle, accepting Kody’s apology – and his explanation about why he said he hadn’t truly loved his first three wives – finally made everything feel complete.

Now that the family is selling the 14-acre Coyote Pass property they bought before moving to Flagstaff, Arizona, and will split the money equally, Janelle plans to follow Meri’s example from her divorce and seek a spiritual release from their former church.

You know, I’m really feeling like now is the moment to let go and move forward. Everything with that situation is finally resolved – we’ve handled it, said what needed to be said, and it’s time to officially close that chapter and focus on what’s next. It’s a freeing feeling, honestly!

Now beginning a new phase of her life with her oldest daughter, Madison Brush, and their farm in North Carolina, she hopes she and Kody can both find lasting happiness.

Janelle stated that she and Kody are financially separated. She added that their recent meeting helped her gain closure on their past relationship, filling in some remaining questions and solidifying that chapter of her life as finished.

Janelle listened politely to Kody talk about the difficult times after their split, but she was firm about her own choices. “I honestly don’t care what Kody thinks about me finding my own spiritual path,” she said. “I just don’t care.”

Even though she once felt a formal separation wasn’t necessary, she now wants to officially end the relationship.

Janelle admitted she wasn’t sure how she’d feel after completing the spiritual process, but she understood she would know it had made a difference, at least in her understanding of things.

That’s just one of the many things she’s revealed about her life since leaving Kody. See everything she and the other former sister wives have discussed this season.

Now that her divorce from Kody Brown is final, Janelle Brown shared in the season 20 premiere of Sister Wives that she’s taking a similar approach to Meri Brown.

Although they were married for 29 years, Christine was never legally married to Kody. She explained on the show’s premiere that she’d considered a ‘spiritual divorce’ a long time ago but didn’t know it was possible. When Meri pursued one, Christine asked her who she needed to contact to do the same.

Janelle’s former sister wife—who had been released from their church due to being abandoned—gladly provided some missing information. Janelle explained, “She’s been really helpful in connecting me with everyone.”

Madison Brush is still dealing with the fallout from her father’s actions. She recently shared that she’s still hurt and struggling with the distance between them, following her ongoing estrangement from Kody. Madison is one of six children Kody shares with his former wife, Janelle.

The mother of four admitted she hopes her husband’s father will be present, and that she desires a resolution to their issues. She acknowledged her own role in the conflict, but expressed frustration as she continues to work on managing her expectations and avoiding disappointment.

I’ve been watching her work through this, and it’s really tough. She’s realizing she needs to see him as he truly is, not as she wanted him to be. It’s about accepting that he might not have known how to be there for her, and maybe he was dealing with his own pain too. She’s trying so hard to understand that, and it’s a process.

He also might not be willing to cede too much ground.

Kody expressed wanting to repair his relationships with Meri, Janelle, Christine Brown, and their kids, but feels like it can only happen if they decide to make it happen. He believes they’ve reached a standstill because any progress depends entirely on their willingness to try.

As a longtime viewer, I was really struck by what Robyn shared recently. She explained that she always dreamed of having a family, and it wasn’t just about being with Kody. She even said she’d had proposals from other men before! It wasn’t always a grand, romantic gesture, but she mentioned several times that guys had told her they’d marry her quickly if she’d have them.

She consistently stated her position: “I told him straight up, I was open to the idea of a plural marriage.” She also clarified that if Kody hadn’t already been married with three wives at the time, she would have given him the same answer if he’d approached her then.

Kody explained that, despite not planning to be exclusive, he and his current partner had unintentionally become a monogamous couple, playfully declaring, “It’s just you and me now.”

Though he admittedly had one concern.

Kody hinted to Robyn that he desired a more fulfilling intimate life. In a private interview, he explained his view that polygamy allows a man to have everything he wants, while monogamy often leaves him feeling unfulfilled.

Meri is actively dating and has a clear idea of what she wants in a partner. She’s looking for a tall man who loves to travel and, importantly, prefers dogs over cats, as she shared on a recent episode of the show.

And she definitely needs someone who won’t scare easily.

I was really hurt by something that happened when I was dating. I was talking to this guy, and things were going okay until he found out I practice polygamy. He immediately said he couldn’t continue talking to me – that it just wasn’t something he was open to. It felt awful, like he was dismissing me simply because of my beliefs. It was like, ‘You’re a polygamist, therefore I’m not interested,’ and it really stung.

Meri explained that it was the first time she truly understood that some people wouldn’t even bother talking to her because of who she was.

Janelle firmly believes she was the only one in her large family who really desired to settle on Coyote Pass.

On the October 3rd episode, Janelle revealed she wasn’t sure she ever truly envisioned the whole family living on the 14-acre Coyote Pass property they bought before moving to Flagstaff, Arizona, back in 2018. She was discussing the disagreements the family had over the land.

From what I’ve observed, Kody’s second wife actually liked the idea of living on that property – she thought it was lovely and couldn’t see a reason not to! But she also felt it was just a temporary interest for Kody and the others, not a long-term plan. It seemed like a fleeting thought, rather than a serious commitment from him and his other wives.

She explained that no one was eager to live in that area, especially not Christine. Meri would have agreed to move if everyone else had, but they didn’t.

Janelle explained that Kody and Robyn’s former property, a two-acre home with five bedrooms which they recently sold for $1.7 million, felt unfinished despite being mostly built.

Janelle explained that despite the initial agreement to divide the land into four pieces, she quickly realized after moving to Flagstaff that it wouldn’t work out.

Kody believes he knows why his relationships with most of his adult children – excluding Robyn’s oldest kids, Dayton, Aurora, and Breanna – aren’t very good.

Okay, so I was totally watching the show on October 5th, and he finally admitted it – things with his grown kids are…rough. He said it’s all this constant back-and-forth, little digs and hints, and it’s just wrecked everyone’s trust. Honestly, it’s heartbreaking to see, but at least he’s acknowledging it! It sounds like nobody knows where they stand with each other anymore, and it’s just a mess of hurt feelings on all sides. I feel so bad for everyone involved, but I’m glued to the screen to see what happens next!

And these days, not many of his grown kids are on Team Kody.

Even though Mykelti Padron, one of Christine’s six children, had seemed the most publicly supportive of her father, she shared her thoughts on the family split several months after she, her husband Tony Padron, and their three children moved to North Carolina.

She believes that if he simply took responsibility for his actions, at least some of his children would try to reconnect with him. During a fan Q&A in October 2024, shared on Instagram (@withoutacrystalball), she explained that instead of blaming his children, his other wife, or outside influences, a simple apology and willingness to discuss his mistakes – like saying, ‘I understand I messed up. I’m sorry. Can we talk?’ – would make a huge difference.

When Coyote Pass was sold in April 2025, Janelle and Meri finalized their separation from Kody and received money from the sale. Christine had previously given up her share of the land in exchange for keeping the profits from selling her house in Arizona.

On the October 5th episode, Janelle playfully told Meri it felt like saying, “Goodbye, and honestly, I don’t want to see you again.”

But she certainly wouldn’t have waved off an even nicer present.

She stated that if she had been legally married to Kody, she would have rightfully claimed half of his possessions, as they would have been considered jointly owned.

Kody and Robyn had to review the paperwork for their new $2.1 million home before they could give up on their plans for Coyote Pass. Kody explained on the October 12th episode that selling the Coyote Pass property only became possible once they found a different house they really wanted.

The father of 18 children is also looking forward to leaving behind the painful memories associated with their old house. He explained, “We’ve gone through a lot of difficult times here, and we’re hoping for a fresh start, a completely new chapter in our lives.”

Kody believed he could love multiple wives, but he admitted his attention wasn’t always shared equally. On a recent episode of the show, he explained that while he was committed to the idea of plural marriage and his family, he found it difficult to fully devote himself to each individual wife, and vice versa. He also felt the wives weren’t consistently devoted to him or to one another as a unified group.

Looking back, he realized one mistake was giving Robyn a lavish lifestyle – a $1.65 million, five-bedroom house – while his other wives had more modest living arrangements. He admitted he didn’t understand why his marriages to Meri, Janelle, and Christine failed, but he believed providing Robyn with such a nice home created jealousy. He felt his wives struggled with the fact that he was so determined to ensure Robyn was well taken care of.

Christine found it difficult to relax around Kody. As she explained in an October 26th interview, he was a very demanding husband with many specific needs and preferences, from what he ate to how he groomed himself.

Bottom line, she noted, “It was a lot.”

Janelle isn’t interested in starting a new relationship anytime soon, especially after her breakup with Kody. She admitted to Christine and her husband, David Woolley, that being with Kody was exhausting, and she believes relationships in general require a lot of effort.

That’s why she’s pushing back against David’s suggestions she join FarmersOnly. She explained to the cameras, “David just doesn’t accept that I’m not interested in dating right now. I keep telling him, ‘No, no, no!'”

Kody generally made an effort to address each of his wives correctly. As Christine explained on the November 2nd episode, he almost never miscalled them. She described those painful moments when hearing another wife’s name would be upsetting, and confirmed that it thankfully never occurred.

Though there were some close calls.

I often found myself doing that,” Kody confessed. “I definitely have, and I sometimes even initiated the conflicts before changing direction.

To hear Christine tell it, she felt quite stabbed in the kidney by her former sister wife.

She told David on the November 2nd episode that she felt deeply betrayed by Robyn, explaining she’d lost all trust in her. She shared that she used to confide in Robyn, but Robyn would then reveal those private conversations to Kody, causing problems and making him angry. Because of this, she stopped sharing anything personal with Robyn.

But Robyn insisted she was just trying to play marriage counselor.

Christine often told me she wished Kody understood what she was going through and the difficulties she was facing. I was young and thought I could fix things, but looking back, I realize I should have let them handle it themselves.

Meri used to be flattered by the idea that Kody favored her over his other ex-wives, but when he tried to chat with her over video about selling their house in Arizona, she wasn’t interested in being friendly.

He reflected on a conversation with Janelle, recalling that things used to be good with Meri – he specifically remembered helping her move to Parowan, Utah, and having a pleasant time. But he noted that their relationship has become strained and awkward since then.

However, Meri maintained she was only interested in business matters, especially after hearing Kody’s comments from past seasons.

I had to be firm and set clear limits with him,” she said. “It’s frustrating when he acts friendly on video calls and pretends everything is okay after saying hurtful things to me and my friends – I won’t tolerate that behavior.

Christine happily accepted David’s proposal in 2023, but her ex-husband believes he should have been consulted beforehand.

Kody explained that his youngest daughter, Truely, lives with David, and he feels he should get to know him better.

In fact, he mused, he “should have had the right, even, to discriminate David.”

Janelle was happy to get her part of Coyote Pass back and wasn’t upset about the money she’d already given Robyn and Kody towards their house in Arizona.

She explained on the November 2nd episode that her children think she should try to recover the money she invested in Robyn’s house, but she anticipates a difficult legal battle to do so.

She explained that trying to get money from Kody is difficult, because he always has a long list of excuses for why he doesn’t owe it.

He felt he’d already paid Janelle back for her help with the house. He explained, “Janelle helped Robyn and me buy our home, and I took care of that debt in January.” He recalled her telling him shortly after, “We’re even, you’ve more than covered it.”

Should Kody still be interested in having his love multiplied, there’s no shortage of options.

He told Robyn on November 2nd that he’d received another email from a woman inquiring about plural marriage.

He told Robyn that his former wife was upset with his decision to end plural marriage. Then, surprisingly, she offered to join their family. He explained she was both criticizing his choice and, at the same time, expressing interest in getting to know him and Robyn with the intention of becoming part of their family.

To be honest, Robyn didn’t immediately reject the idea. She later confessed that for a moment, she actually thought, ‘This could be amazing – it’s what I’ve always dreamed of.’ She even wondered if it would be a good fit.

Ultimately, though, it was a no.

She was upset they contacted Kody directly. She believes it’s generally more respectful to approach someone through their wives, rather than contacting him personally.

Even though Kody admits his strained relationships have caused the family to fall apart, he needs to make significant changes if he wants to repair things.

On the November 9th episode of the show, Janelle revealed that Maddie didn’t tell her father about her fourth pregnancy. Janelle, Kody’s second wife, explained that there was no need to inform him since Maddie and her father hadn’t spoken in two or three years, and he would find out eventually.

Janelle didn’t just want a relationship with Kody; she wanted to be part of the whole family. Meri recalled that when Janelle married Kody three years into his marriage with Meri—and after a short marriage to Meri’s brother—Janelle seemed very considerate of her feelings. Meri said Janelle acted in a way that made her feel included and protected from hurt.

Meri admitted that she felt jealous and a mix of other emotions as they navigated the challenges of trying to make their plural marriage work. She also said it made her feel cherished that her wife was willing to put in the effort.

Meri doesn’t back down easily. However, things became complicated when the family agreed to sell Coyote Pass, the 14-acre property they bought after relocating to Arizona.

During the November 16th show, Meri said the problem seemed to be about making sure the correct people were listed as owners on the properties. She added that she didn’t understand why the paperwork couldn’t have simply been signed and finalized.

She was also puzzled by another of Kody’s moves.

She explained, clearly upset, that he was blaming her for the delays and claiming she was the reason things weren’t moving forward. She said this was because they wanted her to sign a confidentiality agreement she wasn’t comfortable with, and she questioned their motives, asking why they were trying to prevent her from speaking freely.

To hear Robyn tell it, though, their discussions were nothing to howl about.

“Meri and I have always been able to talk pretty frankly with each other,” she explained. “I was really just trying to find out what she needed and it really, like my intention is always in her best interest.”

Christine says having more money has actually made life easier. As a mother of six, she vividly remembers the stress of not having enough money for even basic groceries.

She explained that it’s mortifying to reach the cashier and discover you’ve spent more than you intended. While you might be able to cover it with a check, it would likely bounce, forcing you to return items to stay within your budget.

Other times they had to walk back plans to pay for certain essentials.

Meri explained that they used to have regular meetings – either weekly or monthly – to decide which bill was the most urgent to pay.

Robyn was determined to ensure everyone received a fair share when it came time to sell Coyote Pass. As she explained on the November 23rd episode, she wanted each of the four adults involved – herself, Kody, Janelle, and Meri – to receive an equal quarter of the profits. She admitted this led to significant disagreements and arguments with Kody, but she felt it was important to stand her ground.

Ultimately, Kody explained that when the 14-acre property was sold in April 2025, they decided to simply resolve the situation and distribute the proceeds equally. Their plan was to give each person their 25% share.

Janelle didn’t directly say Kody had a mid-life crisis, but she mentioned on the November 23rd episode that his behavior changed after he turned a significant age.

Janelle explained that around the time Kody turned 50 and was married to his fourth wife, Robyn, he began to complain about the burden of supporting the entire family. She believes he felt like Robyn was his true soulmate and that keeping up four marriages was simply too much work.

But Kody took issue with the idea that he didn’t put in the work.

He firmly stated that he’d always stepped up and fulfilled his duties within the family. He consistently gave his all, but felt like his efforts weren’t reciprocated by other family members.

He joked that dealing with his three divorces felt like everyone was going through menopause at the same time. He explained that men can experience hormonal changes too, suggesting his testosterone levels dropped, and he simply lost the motivation to put in effort.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen all sorts of family dynamics, and Janelle Brown’s story is definitely one for the books! She shared that when her mom, Sheryl Usher, first found out she was considering plural marriage, she was convinced she needed to ‘save’ her from what she thought was a dangerous cult. It’s funny how things turn out, though! Instead of discouraging Janelle, Sheryl actually ended up marrying Kody’s dad, Winn Brown – and get this, it happened before Janelle and Kody even said ‘I do’! Talk about a twist!

Okay, so when they decided to get married, I was honestly a little thrown! It definitely made the family connections… complicated, to say the least. But you know what? I quickly got over it. It was strange at first, sure, but then I thought, ‘This is actually… good!’ It’s just nice to have another person around, someone who gets it, you know? I was totally okay with it, really!

Ysabel Brown says she wishes she’d had more one-on-one time with her father, Kody. On a recent episode of the show, she explained that she and her dad aren’t very close.

Ysabel explained that her mom is wonderful at being both a mother and a father, and her stepfather, David, is also great.

Despite everything, Ysabel didn’t want to say her relationship with Kody was broken. “He’s still my dad, and I love him,” she explained.

Though Janelle still feels the family had something special, that spark wasn’t apparent early on.

Janelle felt hurt that her ex-husband didn’t always support her, often siding with others instead, especially early in their relationship. Combined with existing issues like jealousy and insecurity, this created a difficult dynamic for them both, and things weren’t good between them.

Oh my gosh, it just breaks my heart hearing Janelle talk about those early days! Can you imagine? She got pregnant with Logan so quickly after marrying Kody, and then he was always gone for work! She said his time at home was so limited, and honestly, it’s just so sad. She basically had to just keep everything quiet and take care of things on her own, and she ended up losing touch with who she was. It’s just… heartbreaking. She really sacrificed so much, and I feel for her so much!
