Since the first Super Smash Bros. game came out on Nintendo 64 in 1999, the series has evolved significantly. The latest installment, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (released in 2018), truly lived up to its name with a huge selection of characters and the best gameplay the series has ever offered. Now, recent news suggests that a new Smash Bros. game might be in development sooner than expected, which is exciting news for fans.
The recent presentation for Kirby’s Air Ride confirmed there won’t be any downloadable content. In a separate post, Sora Sakurai also announced that the development team will be dissolving soon. There’s a small window for a final update or adjustment, but after that, the game will be finished. This will allow Sakurai to begin work on his next project, which is expected to be a new Super Smash Bros. game.
The Key Holdup In A New Super Smash Bros. Game Has Been Removed

Everyone expected Masahiro Sakurai wouldn’t begin work on a new game until he finished supporting and fixing issues with Kirby’s Air Ride. Although the game wasn’t getting any new downloadable content, it wasn’t known how long the support period would last.
With a clearer idea of the development schedule and the current team wrapping up their work, it looks like active work on the next Super Smash Bros. game could begin within a few months. That’s exciting! And just to be clear, as a big Kirby fan myself, this isn’t meant to downplay Kirby’s importance at all.
Now that Masahiro Sakurai is free to start a new project, many believe his next game will be another Super Smash Bros. title. While Nintendo might prefer he work on something different, that doesn’t seem very probable. It’s been a long time since the last Super Smash Bros. game, and with the new Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, a new Super Smash Bros. would be a major, and logical, title to help launch the console.
The biggest challenge now is making a sequel to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a game that exceeded all expectations. It boasted an incredible roster of 82 characters from iconic franchises like Dragon Quest, Persona, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Minecraft, Tekken, Street Fighter, Bayonetta, and many others. Surpassing that will be tough, but if anyone can do it, it’s Masahiro Sakurai and Nintendo.
