Why Sony Cancelled Marvel’s Sinister Six Movie Finally Explained

Sony and Marvel made a deal where Marvel could create Spider-Man movies, but Sony would still produce films based on characters from Spider-Man’s universe. Sony hoped to build a franchise around these villains and supporting characters. While Venom proved successful and spawned a trilogy, other attempts like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter flopped with both audiences and critics, effectively ending Sony’s plans for further spin-offs. Before these failures, Sony had considered a Sinister Six movie, which many still see as a lost potential.

Director Drew Goddard, while promoting his new film Project Hail Mary, recently told Collider the story behind the cancelled Sinister Six movie. Goddard explained that the 2014 Sony hack led to the film’s demise. He was on the Sony lot when the FBI arrived to investigate, and felt helpless to prevent the cancellation. He admitted being disappointed, but acknowledged it could have been worse if Sony hadn’t liked his script in the first place.

What Was Happening At Sony With the Sinister Six Movie?

For over ten years, Sony has been trying to develop a Sinister Six movie. They’ve hinted at it a few times, like in the post-credit scene of the Morbius film where Vulture tries to recruit him, and even back in the Andrew Garfield Amazing Spider-Man films. In those movies, characters like Lizard, Electro, Green Goblin, and Rhino were introduced as potential members. Early on, a scene after the first Amazing Spider-Man movie showed a room filled with Doctor Octopus’s tentacles and other clues. Many fans thought these plans were abandoned when the Marvel Cinematic Universe took off and effectively ended the Garfield Spider-Man series.

Looking back, there was so much more going on than I realized at the time. The 2014 Sony Pictures hack was a huge deal – a hacker group exposed a ton of confidential information. Everything from employee personal details to unreleased movies and future plans was leaked. I remember being shocked to learn that Drew Goddard’s script for Sinister Six was among the stolen files, but even more surprising were the emails between Sony’s Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios. They were actually talking about bringing Spider-Man into the MCU! That leak, and how fans reacted to it, ultimately led to the end of The Amazing Spider-Man series and, amazingly, Spider-Man joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s wild to think about how much that one event changed everything.

The cancellation of Drew Goddard’s Sinister Six project also meant the story about Peter Parker’s still-living father was left unfinished. Fortunately, things turned around when Tom Holland was cast as Spider-Man, leading to the development of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Now, Spider-Man is a key and highly successful character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
