Season 5 of Stranger Things is the final opportunity for the creators, the Duffer brothers, to resolve all the unanswered questions and storylines. While there’s talk of a potential animated spin-off, the main story will conclude with this season, so it needs a strong and fulfilling ending. Recently revealed details show the season will include some surprising turns, most notably the return of Kali, a character with illusion powers who hasn’t been seen since a much-discussed episode in Season 2.
In a recent interview with Variety, the Duffer brothers explained their decision to bring back the character Kali, portrayed by Linnea Berthelsen. Ross Duffer said they wanted the show to feel fully resolved, ensuring no storylines were left unfinished and everything connected logically. Bringing Kali back helped tie up a loose end. They also wanted to give Berthelsen another opportunity to showcase her talent.
We’re big fans of Linnea’s work, and we didn’t feel her character got a fair chance to shine in Season 2. Bringing her back was about giving her that opportunity, but it wasn’t just for the sake of it. As we developed the new season, we discovered that her return actually strengthened Eleven’s storyline and allowed us to conclude it in a more satisfying way. It wasn’t about simply resolving an unfinished plot point; it served a real narrative purpose.
Matt Duffer explained that the episode “The Lost Sister” from Season 2 was written quickly to meet the Halloween release date. The first draft didn’t work, and they only had a week to revise it. He admits they weren’t fully satisfied with the final result and felt bad that they couldn’t make the storyline work better for the actress, Linnea. However, they were impressed with her performance and wanted to bring her character back, feeling she was a great addition to the season.
What Eleven’s “Sister” Adds to Stranger Things Season 5
Kali Berthelsen’s appearance in Stranger Things Season 5 is a surprising one. Introduced in Season 2, she was portrayed as a twisted reflection of Eleven, even building her own friend group – but with dangerous intentions. It appears Kali’s desire for revenge against those who harmed her at Hawkins Lab led to her capture, and the military then exploited her powers, using them against Eleven in a notable way.
As Stranger Things heads into its final season, more characters are developing special powers, including Will Byers, joining Kali. The show is building a team of superpowered individuals to help battle Vecna. However, Kali hasn’t always been reliable, so it’s possible she could betray Eleven and her friends.
