A recently published report discloses an important modification in James Gunn’s Superman ahead of its Indian premiere. In response to certain content issues, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has mandated the exclusion of a 33-second sequence from the movie before it hits the screens.
Superman’s 33-second-long ‘sensual visual’ got deleted in Indian release
The Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) allowed James Gunn’s Superman movie to be shown in theaters across India on July 7, 2025. However, they required the removal of 41 seconds from the film due to explicit content. This includes a 33-second scene with suggestive visuals that appears in two parts and an eight-second shot depicting an offensive gesture. These scenes will be replaced by a shorter, alternate version lasting only two seconds.
According to a tip from a trade source, guests at the premiere on July 9 seemed displeased with the edit. It’s noticeable that certain parts have been removed. Additionally, they appeared puzzled as to why a section of the kissing scene remained uncensored while another part was censored.
Allegedly, it’s said that the hidden material in the story of Superman features two romantic moments between Clark Kent and Lois Lane – one at her apartment and another after their aerial encounter, which occurred post the climactic fight.
The Cinematic Board of Film Certification (CBFC) requested the studio to remove some offensive language, following current censorship guidelines that apply to Hollywood movies in India. As a result, the film’s running time was adjusted to 130 minutes and 44 seconds, after all required cuts were made.
In this movie, David Corenswet is cast as Clark Kent, whereas Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult are featured as Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. The characters of Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Supergirl are portrayed by Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Milly Alcock respectively.
In similar instances, the Censorship Board for Film Certification (CBFC) muted five potentially offensive words in Marvel’s Thunderbolts and requested the removal of questionable language from Mission: Impossible – Fallout (Final Reckoning). A source revealed to Bollywood Hungama that studios sometimes make these cuts ahead of time, opting for self-censorship. For instance, F1: The Movie replaced a middle finger emoji with a friendly fist bump, and the studio edited Mickey 17 prior to submission.
Superman released in India and globally on July 11, 2025.
