The Spider-Verse trilogy was originally meant to be finished by now. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was once planned for release in 2024, but production delays pushed the release date back. Reports of difficult working conditions during the making of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse contributed to this. Now, Beyond the Spider-Verse isn’t expected until June 2027, meaning fans will have to wait four years to find out what happens after the cliffhanger ending of Across the Spider-Verse. While delays are always frustrating for fans, the team behind Spider-Verse had a valid reason for postponing the film.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the producers and writers behind the Spider-Verse films, recently explained to Gizmodo how Beyond the Spider-Verse came to be. Chris Miller said the project originally started as a single movie, but it became too ambitious. They split it into two parts, and then realized the second half wasn’t just a section of a story—it had its own complete beginning, middle, and end.
Lord explained that they understand the overall outcome, but want a clearer picture of the process itself. They realized a key question is: when a person’s work or gifts strain family relationships, how can those relationships be repaired and everyone thrive?
Beyond the Spider-Verse Needs to Tell a Complete Story
Splitting a franchise’s final story into multiple movies has become a popular trend. While it’s financially beneficial for studios – giving them guaranteed box office success – it doesn’t always make for a good story. As one creator pointed out, these split films often result in installments that feel incomplete, lacking a clear beginning, middle, and end. Even as part of a larger series, each movie should still feel like a satisfying story on its own, with a compelling beginning, middle, and end.
After hearing feedback, the creators of Beyond the Spider-Verse decided to postpone the film. They wanted more time to refine the story and make sure it lived up to the high quality of the previous Spider-Verse movies. The series is known for its innovative and emotional storytelling, so it’s understandable they’d want the final film in the trilogy to be exceptional. They didn’t want Miles Morales’ story to end in a disappointing way.
It’s common for the middle movie in a trilogy to be the darkest, and Across the Spider-Verse definitely puts Miles through a lot. He discovers he wasn’t meant to have superpowers and learns his father is going to die. Trying to fix things, he ends up in the wrong dimension and is captured by another version of himself. Beyond the Spider-Verse seems like it will focus on Miles dealing with these challenges and trying to rebuild his life. He feels responsible for everything that’s happened, because getting powers accidentally led to the villain, The Spot, causing chaos in his world.
The idea of family is central to the Spider-Verse films. It’s not just about Miles and his parents, but also the strong bonds he forms with the other Spider-People he meets. So, it’s fitting that family will likely be the core of Beyond the Spider-Verse. Based on the previous movies, we can expect a deeply emotional story. The film will probably explore whether Miles can balance everything he wants, or if he’ll have to make a heartbreaking sacrifice. Either way, Beyond the Spider-Verse promises to be a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy, bringing the story to a powerful and uplifting end.
