Netflix’s new sci-fi action movie launched on March 6th and quickly became a hit, racking up over 39.3 million views in just three days. It’s now the streaming service’s second-biggest release of the year so far. Directed by Patrick Hughes, known for films like The Hitman’s Bodyguard and The Expendables 3, and starring Alan Ritchson from the series Reacher, the movie has received positive feedback from both viewers and critics, earning scores of 68% and 70% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Given the popularity of the Reacher series on Prime Video, it’s surprising that a high-budget action movie starring Alan Ritchson didn’t get a theatrical release, particularly during the quieter movie season before major spring and summer films come out. Usually, this suggests a film isn’t very good or won’t make much money in theaters. However, that wasn’t the case with War Machine; its debut on Netflix was a deliberate decision.
Lionsgate Played the Streaming vs. Theatrical Game, and Made a Smart Choice
Originally, War Machine was created for a traditional theatrical release, boasting a substantial budget and featuring established actors like Dennis Quaid and Jai Courtney. However, Lionsgate recently explained that they deliberately chose to release the film directly on streaming platforms, even after sparking a bidding war among potential distributors.
Instead of a traditional theatrical release during a quiet period, Lionsgate chose to premiere the movie on Netflix, and it was a smart move. The film, which had the strongest opening for an original animated movie in nearly ten years, benefited from high-quality visuals and filmmaking. This attracted Netflix, who purchased the rights for a significant amount and helped the film quickly reach the top spot worldwide.
Because it doesn’t have to compete with other movies in theaters – even those very different from it – Netflix is almost certain to have a hit on its hands. The film’s quick success suggests a sequel is likely, and discussions about it have already begun between Patrick Hughes and Alan Ritchson.
Given the success of Ritchson’s show on Prime Video, he was ready to star in his own movie, and possibly a series of them. War Machine was a great opportunity for Netflix, and it allows Ritchson to potentially become the lead in a long-running action series – a genre he’s clearly well-suited for.
War Machine Is so Successful Because of Seamless Genre Blending & Short Runtime
Beyond its director and actors, War Machine has everything needed to succeed as a movie in theaters, which explains why it’s become so popular on Netflix. At just 107 minutes long, the film feels like a quick, exciting introduction to a potential larger series, rather than a typical, overly long streaming movie. Making a fast-paced, action-packed war film in under two hours is challenging, but War Machine pulls it off well.
The film feels like a contained piece of a much bigger alien invasion story, initially presenting as a typical war movie about Army Ranger trainees. It then unexpectedly transforms into a violent and graphic adaptation of H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds, blending action and war elements with science fiction to create a surprising and satisfying experience for sci-fi fans.
War Machine doesn’t hold back on the action. While it shares emotional depth with films like Fury and Lone Survivor, it delivers the intense, sci-fi spectacle of movies such as Dredd and District 9. The film seamlessly blends these different styles, creating a truly engaging experience. What starts as a typical sci-fi movie quickly evolves into something much more, leaving audiences hoping it will become a major action franchise on Netflix.
