The popular American comedy, Malcolm in the Middle, is returning for a special four-episode reunion called Life’s Still Unfair. Most of the original actors are reprising their roles, though one familiar face will be missing.
Erik Per Sullivan became well-known as Dewey on the show Malcolm in the Middle. He played the youngest brother, often the target of his siblings’ jokes and caught up in the hilarious chaos caused by their parents.
You know, it was really heartwarming to see Dewey at the end of the original run. He’d really come into his own as a teenager – he was doing well in school, and I loved how he genuinely cared for his little brother, Jamie. It was a nice change to see him so well-adjusted.
Viewers are eager to find out what Dewey has been doing over the years since the show first aired, but they might be surprised to learn he’s now played by a different actor. Per Sullivan, who originally played Dewey, chose not to return for the new series, and here’s the reason why.
Why was Dewey recast in the Malcolm in the Middle revival?

Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey on Malcolm in the Middle, chose not to return for the show’s revival. He had stopped acting several years prior and moved on to other pursuits.
Linwood Boomer, the creator of Malcolm in the Middle, shared that the show’s team really tried to get Per Sullivan to return to acting for one final appearance.
Despite initial interest, the former TV star remained committed to leaving the entertainment industry. He is now focused on earning a Master’s degree in Victorian Literature at Harvard University.
Even though he isn’t appearing in the new episodes, Jane Kaczmarek, who played his mother Lois on Malcolm in the Middle, shared in a YouTube interview that he is doing “very well.”
She explained that while many people dream of working in entertainment, it’s not a good fit for everyone, and she appreciates recognizing that.
That’s right! Frankie Muniz, known for his role in Malcolm in the Middle, actually took a break from acting to become a race car driver.

Like many child stars, Jonathan Taylor Thomas from Home Improvement and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen of Full House decided to leave acting as adults. They all became famous at a young age and later chose different paths.
Despite the outcome, the show’s creators definitely made an effort. According to Kaczmarek, Per Sullivan was offered a significant amount of money to return, but he declined.
Linwood Boomer, the creator of Malcolm in the Middle, and Tracy Katsky, an executive producer, explained how the decision to limit Dewey’s involvement affected his role in the revival. He mostly appears in the show through phone or video calls with his family.
Katsky explained to TVLine that the character spends so much time on screen because they held out hope until the very end that Erik would reconsider his decision.
Boomer remembered telling Per Sullivan that filming his smaller part on the show would only take about half a day, but they still couldn’t reach an agreement.
Boomer remembered the producer asking, ‘Do you want to act again?’ He explained that he immediately responded with a ‘no’ and laughed, recalling that Per Sullivan had mentioned the producer’s earlier fame on the 1970s show The Little House on the Prairie.
Once the comparison was made clear, Boomer understood and accepted the decision. Luckily, he believes Caleb Ellsworth-Clark is a perfect replacement.
Besides playing Craig Feldspar on Malcolm in the Middle, Per Sullivan appeared in films like Christmas with the Kranks and the animated Arthur and the Minimoys (released as ‘and the Invisibles’). His last on-screen performance was in the 2010 crime drama, Twelve.
You can now watch Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair on Disney+. A Disney+ subscription starts at just £5.99 per month.
Okay, so I just added Malcolm in the Middle to my watchlist on the TopMob app – it’s called What to Watch. Seriously, if you’re looking for daily TV suggestions and cool features, you should download it. It’s a great way to keep up with what’s new, and I’m hoping it’ll help me find my next binge-worthy show – starting with revisiting the Wilkersons, of course!
