Wiccan quickly became a fan favorite in the Marvel TV show Agatha All Along. With a significant role expected in the upcoming VisionQuest series, Marvel is revisiting the character’s origins with a new comic book storyline.
Wyatt Kennedy writes and Andy Pereira illustrates Wiccan: Witches’ Road #1, a comic that brings back the character William “Billy” Kaplan. Readers first met Billy in the Young Avengers series as the hero known as The Asgardian. Later, it was revealed he’s one of the Scarlet Witch’s magically reborn sons, and had been pretending to be a god from Norse mythology. Billy is also married to Hulkling, a character with Kree and Skrull heritage who originally presented himself as a Gamma Mutate similar to the Hulk.
The first few pages of Wiccan: Witches’ Road #1 quickly catch new readers up to speed, especially those who know Wiccan from the Agatha All Along series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It also explains what’s been happening recently, including why Billy Kaplan had been living off-Earth for the last few years. This was because his husband, Hulkling, had become the ruler of a combined Kree and Skrull empire. But both heroes had to come back to Earth when Hulkling was removed from power during the 2025 Imperial event.
Witches Road sets new status quo for Wiccan
I’m really excited about the first issue of ‘Wiccan: Witches’ Road’! It’s a great way to get to know Billy Maximoff, who inspired the Billy Maximoff we see in the MCU. It shows he’s not just about magic – he’s a genuinely skilled hero with serious survival and fighting abilities. We learn through a flashback, while he’s talking to Hulking, that he actually trained with Kate Bishop, Hawkeye, which explains a lot!
Luckily, with Hulking hurt and Wiccan unable to use his powers, a new adventure begins. After Billy rescues a village from a monster, the grateful people send him to a local witch who may be able to help him regain his abilities.
Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe might recognize this premise, but Wiccan: Witches’ Road #1 offers a fresh take on it. The central witch isn’t Wanda Maximoff or Agatha Harkness, and the story’s direction will likely appeal to those anticipating the VisionQuest storyline, as well as fans of Marvel’s magical characters.
Wiccan: Witches’ Road #1 is now available in comic shops everywhere.
