Wicked: For Good box office revealed as sequel scores one of 2025’s biggest box office debuts

I had a feeling Wicked: For Good would be huge, and I was right! After how well the first movie did and seeing all the early ticket sales, it was pretty clear it was going to be a big success – and it definitely is!

While critics haven’t been quite as enthusiastic about the second film (it currently has a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to 88% for the first one), it’s still been a huge hit with audiences. The film earned $226 million worldwide during its opening weekend, with $150 million coming from the US and $76 million from international theaters.

Notably, this opening weekend brought in a lot more money – significantly more, in fact – than the original film’s $164.2 million debut. This means ‘For Good’ has now broken the record for the biggest opening weekend ever for a Broadway movie adaptation.

The film also achieved the fourth-highest opening weekend gross of any movie released this year worldwide, earning less than Lilo & Stitch ($341 million), Jurassic World Rebirth ($322 million), and A Minecraft Movie ($313 million).

This puts it ahead of both of this summer’s biggest superhero movies, Superman ($220 million) and The Fantastic Four ($218 million). This success suggests that superhero films might not be the guaranteed box office hits they used to be.

As a huge fan, I was so excited to see that this movie is based on the second half of the incredibly popular Wicked musical! And even better, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are back as Elphaba and Glinda, with the story happening alongside all the familiar events from The Wizard of Oz. It’s like getting a whole new layer to a story I already love!

After the movie came out, both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande – who received Oscar nominations for their work in the first film and may be nominated again this year – posted heartfelt farewells to their characters on social media.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Erivo explained that no amount of writing – not even an essay, poem, or Shakespearean-style prose – could fully capture the impact of her experience and the valuable lessons she learned. She concluded the post with a simple, grateful message: ‘Thank you for letting me be your Elphaba.’

Ariana Grande shared a heartfelt message: “Thank you to my wonderful Glinda, for everything. I’ll always love you… ‘Wicked’ is now available!”
