It’s been a busy year since “Wicked: Part One” premiered – the movie even received ten Oscar nominations! – and now, finally, the second part of the popular musical adaptation is about to be released, bringing us back to the magical land of Oz.
Okay, so the second movie isn’t getting quite the same amazing reviews as the first one, but everyone still seems to really like it! I mean, we at [publication name] gave it 4 stars, calling it a beautiful, colorful spectacle and saying that all the Wicked fans are going to absolutely love it.
We also loved seeing Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande back, each performing a brand new song written by the show’s original composer, Stephen Schwartz. This will make an already fantastic soundtrack even better for fans.
Considering the incredibly long wait between movies, some casual fans of Wicked might not recall all the details of the first film when they go to see the finale.
Here’s a quick review of the key information. Read below to refresh your memory before you see ‘For Good’.
Wicked recap: Everything you need to remember before watching For Good
The first movie actually begins near the story’s conclusion, with the Munchkins rejoicing after the Wicked Witch of the West is defeated. During the celebration, Glinda is asked about rumors that she and the Witch used to be friends, leading her to share their history together.
Elphaba, known as the Witch, was rejected by others almost immediately after birth because of her green skin. But when she took her younger sister, Nessarose, to register for classes at Shiz University, the school’s principal, Madame Morrible, noticed Elphaba had special magical abilities and offered to teach her magic privately.

From the moment Elphaba started at the university, she and her roommate Galinda didn’t get along, as they had very different personalities and goals. At the same time, Elphaba discovered that animals were facing increasing prejudice – they were losing their ability to talk – and she befriended Dr. Dillamond, a goat and one of the last animal professors at the school.
Elphaba began to warm up to Galinda after Galinda convinced Boq, a Munchkin who liked her, to take Nessarose to a party. This allowed Galinda to attend with a new student named Fiyero. Their connection grew even stronger when Galinda comforted Elphaba at the dance after she was teased for wearing a pointed hat – a hat Galinda had originally given her as a joke. After that, they quickly became close friends.
The efforts to suppress animals’ abilities intensified when Dr. Dillamond was removed from school and replaced by Professor Nikidik. One of Professor Nikidik’s first actions was to display a caged lion cub – a device specifically intended to prevent animals from learning to talk.
I always felt so bad for Elphaba! It wasn’t a shock when she got upset, and I admired how she took action, joining forces with Fiyero to liberate that lion and send him safely into the forest. Watching them work together, it was obvious they had a connection, but poor Elphaba convinced herself Fiyero only had eyes for Galinda, and that he didn’t return her feelings. It was heartbreaking to witness!
Eventually, Elphaba got a chance to meet her idol, the Wizard of Oz, thanks to a special invention. She and Galinda – who had recently changed her name to Glinda to support her friend Dillamond, who couldn’t say Galinda properly – traveled to the Emerald City. When they arrived, the original actresses who played Elphaba and Glinda, Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth, made a quick appearance in a longer-than-usual song and dance performance.
When Elphaba and Glinda finally met the Wizard, they were shocked to discover he wasn’t the powerful sorcerer everyone believed him to be – he was just an ordinary man. They were also surprised to see Madame Morrible there. The two of them then convinced Elphaba to cast a spell that made the Wizard’s monkey guards grow wings, turning them into flying spies.
The event made Elphaba understand that the Wizard and Madame Morrible were behind the efforts against the animals, and that they intended to exploit her magical abilities. Heartbroken and angry, she grabbed the old Grimmerie and fled.
Glinda tried to comfort her friend, but Elphaba had already decided what she was going to do. She flew away from the Emerald City on a broom, using magic to help it lift off. Glinda offered her support, but didn’t go with her. Eventually, guards escorted Glinda away.
The film concluded with Morrible starting a smear campaign against Elphaba, which tragically caused her father, Governor Thropp, to die of a heart attack upon hearing the news. At the same time, Morrible tried to win Glinda’s favor, offering her comfort and support, and setting up the events for the next part of the story.
