The highly anticipated film Wicked: For Good is now in theaters, bringing the epic story of Elphaba and Glinda – filled with self-discovery, heartbreak, love, and friendship – to a satisfying conclusion. While many expected sequels, the film actually wraps up their story. However, exciting news suggests a new project could keep the Wicked universe alive with a different storyline.
Stephen Schwartz, the music producer and writer for Wicked, recently told The Ankler that while he feels the story of Glinda and Elphaba is finished, he and original book writer Winnie Holzman are developing a new project set in the world of Wicked. However, it won’t be a direct sequel to the musical.
Stephen Schwartz, when discussing the future of the Wicked franchise and potential sequels, explained that while he’s open to new ideas, he isn’t sure a compelling sequel exists. He shared that he and Winnie Holzman are currently developing concepts that aren’t direct continuations of the Wicked story, as he feels the tale of Glinda and Elphaba is complete. However, they are considering exploring other parts of the Wicked universe.
Gregory Maguire, who wrote the original novel Wicked, has written many other books. However, Winnie and I are exploring a different kind of follow-up – not a direct sequel, but something that expands on the story in a new way, as I see it,” Schwartz explained.
Stephen Schwartz has stated he’s unlikely to create a sequel to Wicked and Wicked: For Good unless a compelling story emerges. He emphasized that any continuation would need a genuine artistic reason, not just to be profitable. Currently, no one has pitched him an idea that he believes warrants another film.
The conversation then turned to the potential for spin-off movies focusing on individual characters, which is one of the appealing aspects of this rich, expansive world. As Schwartz explained, similar to the Star Wars universe which has spawned numerous successful projects, this world has the potential for many stories. He also pointed out that L. Frank Baum wrote more than just The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, creating a whole series of books.
It’s still uncertain what will happen with the Wicked movies, but even though a direct sequel isn’t planned right now, there’s a good chance the story will continue in some way on the big screen.
