Will 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Take Down Avatar: Fire And Ash At The Weekend Box Office? It’s Going To Be A Photo Finish

Sunday’s initial box office reports are just estimates. Because people still buy tickets on Sunday and make last-minute plans, we won’t know the official weekend numbers until tomorrow. Right now, it’s too close to determine which movie was the top earner.

James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire And Ash has been the top movie since its release in mid-December, but Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which came out this past Friday, is now competing for the number one spot. Currently, the two films are very close in performance, with Avatar maintaining a slight lead. See the full Top 10 list based on early numbers below, and read on for a more detailed breakdown.

Early Numbers Still Have Avatar: Fire And Ash At The Top Of The Domestic Box Office

After five weekends in theaters, Avatar: Fire and Ash is still performing very well. It’s looking even better if it can maintain its lead over 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The previous Avatar film, released in 2022, stayed in first place until early February 2023, and the original Avatar held the top spot until February 2010. So, it’s important for this new film to remain number one in the US to continue that successful legacy.

Overall, it’s a small detail in the grand scheme of things, but the 2025 film continues to perform exceptionally well. Recent data from The Numbers shows it earned another $13.3 million domestically over the past three days, bringing its total earnings in the US to $363.5 million. This puts it ahead of James Gunn’s Superman ($354.2 million) in total earnings. Currently, it’s the fourth highest-grossing film of the year, trailing only A Minecraft Movie ($424.1 million), Lilo & Stitch ($423.8 million), and Zootopia 2 ($390 million and still increasing).

As a huge movie fan, I was definitely keeping tabs on Avatar: Fire and Ash last year – it was a massive hit, no doubt. But when you look at the numbers, it’s interesting. While it did really well, it hasn’t made quite as much domestically in its first month as the previous Avatar films. The original Avatar pulled in around $493 million in its first 31 days, and The Way of Water even topped that with $564 million. This new one is still doing great, but it’s a little behind those earlier successes.

As I’ve mentioned before, these films consistently earn the bulk of their revenue from international markets. Domestic ticket sales in the United States and Canada usually account for only about 25-30% of the total worldwide earnings, and that trend continues with this film. It’s still on track to potentially become only the eighth movie ever to gross over $2 billion worldwide.

Currently, Avatar: Fire And Ash has earned $1.318 billion worldwide, making it the 23rd highest-grossing film ever (without adjusting for inflation). It has already surpassed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 ($1.312 billion) and is on track to exceed Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi‘s total of $1.322 billion.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Doesn’t Have A Box Office Weekend To Match Critical Acclaim

While it’s disappointing, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is currently projected to earn $13 million in its opening weekend. This puts it just slightly behind the $13.5 million earned by Avatar: Fire And Ash recently. Although it’s the second-highest opening weekend for any film in the horror series, the results are a little lower than expected.

It’s easy to see why the movie’s box office numbers are disappointing when compared to the success of Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later last year. If the sequel had earned the same $30 million, it would have outperformed the recent James Cameron sci-fi film over the weekend, but it just didn’t generate that level of interest. While the January release date likely played a role – people tend to go to the movies less in winter – the results are still a letdown for the filmmakers and studio. This is especially true considering critics loved the movie, with TopMob’s Nick Venable giving 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple a four-and-a-half star review.

Good news for the film! While it hasn’t been a massive hit yet, with current worldwide earnings of $29.2 million against a $63 million production budget, it still has a chance to become profitable. Plus, the studio has already approved a third movie in the series, meaning the creative team’s original plan – led by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland – will be fully realized despite the film’s initial performance.

Next week, the new film Mercy, starring Chris Pratt, will be released, and it’s poised to compete with the current top movies. Check back here at TopMob next weekend for my latest box office predictions. You can also get a sneak peek at upcoming movie releases in our 2026 Movie Release Calendar.
