The end of Peacemaker season 2 has put the show’s unique take on Captain America-like heroes in a dangerous situation, leaving viewers eager to find out what happens next with the character.
Recent episodes of the sci-fi show have transitioned its characters into the new storyline established by James Gunn, starting with the animated series Creature Commandos and the hit movie Superman.
The story takes place in a different reality where Peacemaker (John Cena), also known as Chris Smith, appears to have it all, but finds himself targeted by a vengeful Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), who leads the organization ARGUS.
The pragmatic head of intelligence, first seen in Creature Commandos, understandably resented Peacemaker. Peacemaker had killed his son during the events of the 2021 film, The Suicide Squad.
The second season of Peacemaker ended with a surprising and exciting connection between the two main storylines, leaving fans wondering if the show will be renewed for a third season.
Here’s the latest information on what’s next for Peacemaker and the show’s memorable characters.
Will there be a Peacemaker season 3?

It’s currently unknown if Peacemaker will get a third season. Instead, the show’s creator, James Gunn, hints that these characters might appear in a different project down the line.
James Gunn, the director behind Guardians of the Galaxy and Superman, recently told Deadline that while he isn’t currently working on a third season of the John Cena series, it’s still a possibility for the future.
The season finale sets up two key storylines for the future of the DC Universe: the introduction of Checkmate, a secret spy organization, and a gateway to Salvation, a prison planet for people with superpowers.
Both options would allow the show to explore these characters further, just as James Gunn has suggested. For now, we’ll have to wait and see what he comes up with next.
When could a potential Peacemaker season 3 be released?

It’s hard to say when a third season of Peacemaker might happen, or if the story will continue in another show. There’s no clear timeline for any potential future projects.
The show’s second season didn’t arrive for nearly four years after the first, mainly because of the big changes happening at DC Studios. The Hollywood strikes in 2023 caused even more delays.
Now that the new DC Universe is actively being developed with projects like Supergirl, Lanterns, and a sequel to Superman titled ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ fans have reason to believe things will move forward more quickly than before.
Since Peacemaker season 2 featured characters like Rick Flag Sr. and Lex Luthor, the show’s story might need to wait until after the events of ‘Man of Tomorrow’ to maintain a consistent timeline.
This points to a possible launch in summer or fall of 2027, but it’s just an estimate at this point. We’ll share official news from Gunn and the team as soon as it’s available.
Who could star in a potential Peacemaker season 3?

If Peacemaker gets another season or expands into a new show, we can probably expect to see the team from 11th Street – now operating as a more polished group called Checkmate – back in action.
As a huge fan, I was so thrilled with how season 2 wrapped up! Seeing that team finally come together – led by Danielle Brooks as Adebayo, Jennifer Holland as Harcourt, and, of course, the amazing John Cena as Peacemaker – was a perfect way to end things. It really felt like the start of something special for this new spy agency.
Returning characters include Freddie Stroma as the delightfully quirky Vigilante, Steve Agee as the clumsy Economos, and Nhut Le as Judomaster, who went from enemy to ally after a shared experience in the Quantum Unfolding Chamber.
Tim Meadows and Sol Rodríguez will be joining season two of Peacemaker as new members of Checkmate. Their characters, Langston Fleury and Sasha Bordeaux, previously worked with ARGUS but left due to disagreements with Rick Flag Sr. (played by Frank Grillo) and his leadership style.
It’s also possible David Denman could return as Keith, the alternate-universe version of Chris Smith’s brother—also known as Captain Triumph. He seemed determined to get revenge when we last saw him, so a return appearance isn’t out of the question.
Here’s a round-up of potential cast members for a future Peacemaker story:
- John Cena as Chris Smith aka Peacemaker
- Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt
- Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo
- Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase aka Vigilante
- Steve Agee as John Economos
- Nhut Le as Judomaster
- Tim Meadows as Langston Fleury
- Sol Rodríguez as Sasha Bordeaux
- Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr
- David Denman as Keith Smith aka Captain Triumph
- Dee Bradley Baker as Eagly
What could a potential Peacemaker season 3 be about?

If *Peacemaker* gets another season or appears in a new movie or show, the story will likely focus on the missions of the Checkmate team and what happens to Chris Smith while he’s on Salvation.
Both characters have roots in DC Comics, and the spy agency in particular has been featured in stories written by creators like Paul Kupperberg, Greg Rucka, and Brian Michael Bendis.
The Checkmate team features characters like Peacemaker (played by John Cena), Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), Vigilante (James Gunn), Deadshot (Will Smith), Sasha Bordeaux (Dolores Rodríguez), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and GI Robot (Sean Gunn).
Overall, this new addition seems to fit perfectly with the direction James Gunn has been taking the DC universe lately.
Salvation is most famous for a miniseries that aired in 2007-2008. Originally proposed by George R.R. Martin, and later written by Bill Willingham and Lilah Sturges, the series centered on a team of supervillains imprisoned on a distant planet who were scheming to get back to Earth.
While we probably won’t see a straight copy of this concept, exploring something similar with the Peacemaker character could be a good way to develop his story within the expanding DC Universe.
Is there a trailer for Peacemaker season 3?
Alas, there’s nothing yet. We’ll update this page if/when any new footage drops.
Don’t miss the last episode of the Peacemaker podcast! James Gunn, Jennifer Holland, and Steve Agee discuss the show and hint at what might happen with the characters in the future.
