The Scream franchise has experienced a major resurgence since the release of the fifth film in 2022, which was both critically well-received and a box office hit. The new films are being made and released faster, and are earning more money, than even the original Scream trilogy. Despite some behind-the-scenes issues, the series shows no signs of slowing down.
I’ve always been a huge fan of the Scream movies, and even before this weekend, they were a fantastic series. But with Scream 7 having the biggest opening weekend ever, it’s clear Ghostface will be back for more! Everyone’s already wondering about Scream 8, and honestly, I think it’s practically guaranteed – the money is definitely there. But beyond that, I’m curious if there’s still a good story to tell. Scream 7 left a couple of interesting plot points hanging, which feel like they’re setting things up for the next installment. Fair warning: I’m about to dive into spoilers for Scream 7!
Scream 8 Is Basically Guaranteed, But What’s the Story?

Okay, so Scream 7 mostly stands on its own. They definitely nod to past movies and bring back familiar faces, but you don’t need to have seen everything to enjoy it. However, the film does lay some groundwork for the future, specifically with two things. First, we meet Sidney Prescott’s oldest daughter, Tatum. By the end, she’s not only faced her mother’s legacy but actively become a part of it, surviving a brutal encounter with not one, but three Ghostfaces! That immediately makes me wonder where Scream 8 will take us – how will Sidney and Tatum deal with living under that shadow, and, let’s be real, the constant threat of new masked killers?
A key hint about the future of Scream 7 appears in the end credits. Instead of Gale Weathers delivering the post-film news report, the role is given to Mindy Meeks-Martin. This suggests the franchise is setting up Mindy and Chad to be adaptable characters who can investigate events even when disconnected from familiar faces.
The latest Scream movie, Scream 7, has a significant issue: the identity of the killer. While the reveal connects to previous films in unexpected ways, fans widely consider it the least convincing motivation in the entire series. Because of this, it’s almost certain that Scream 8 will focus on bringing back a familiar character or developing a more compelling reason for the killings. Fortunately, a producer mentioned to Variety that filming could start this fall, suggesting they’re already working on new ideas.
As of today, Scream 7 has earned over $96.7 million worldwide, surpassing the total box office revenue of Scream 4 (released in 2011). It’s now potentially on track to become the highest-grossing Scream movie ever. Even with a significant drop in ticket sales next weekend – say, a 65% decrease – it’s predicted to earn more than the 2022 Scream film within about ten days. Considering the movie cost around $45 million to make, it’s already proven to be profitable.
The future of the Scream franchise seems secure. It doesn’t really matter who plays Ghostface or which original cast members return – a new movie will happen because there’s a clear demand and it’s likely to be financially successful. Despite receiving the lowest critic scores of any film in the series, it’s still projected to be the most profitable. This is actually a common pattern in horror films, and it means Scream is falling into the same predictable cycle it has always satirized.
