Microsoft recently released a preview of the next Windows 11 update. It includes a helpful new feature: when you try to open a file without a default app or with an unfamiliar file type, Windows will now suggest apps from the Microsoft Store that can open it. This makes it easier to find and install the right app to view your files.
If you try to open a file in Windows and don’t have an app associated with that type of file, a window will appear asking how you’d like to open it. This window now includes suggestions from the Microsoft Store directly in the list, so you can quickly find and install the app you need without having to separately search the store. This makes the process much faster and simpler.
I’m noticing a new update is being released slowly to those of us in the Beta and Dev Insider programs. So, even if you install the latest preview today, you might not see it immediately. Also, it doesn’t seem like there’s a way to turn off the feature that shows recommended apps from the Microsoft Store, at least not yet.
Some people might think this new feature is just another way to show ads, but if it truly suggests only the apps that can actually open the file, it could be really useful and make things much easier. It’s often annoying when you double-click a file and don’t have the right program installed. Being able to install the necessary app directly from the “Open With” menu is a welcome improvement.
Today, we also announced a new platform called the Unified Update Orchestrator. This platform lets app developers use Windows Update to deliver app updates, making the update process simpler and more consistent for users.
