Microsoft wants to fix app updates on Windows 11 — previews new update orchestrator platform designed make updates invisible

Microsoft is testing a new feature for Windows 11 that will make app updates easier. Called the Update Orchestrator Platform, it lets developers improve how their apps receive updates, but it’s currently an optional tool for them to use.

Microsoft says its Unified Update Platform (UOP) will make app updates happen more smoothly and reliably, with less disruption for users. It gives developers tools to connect their apps to UOP, allowing those apps to automatically check for, download, and install updates based on how the user is interacting with the device and its current status.

Apps will still handle delivering updates themselves, but the operating system can now manage checking for and installing those updates. It can do this when you ask it to, or even automatically when it determines an update is ready, all without bothering you.

Microsoft is introducing a new section called “app updates” where users can easily check if their apps have been recently updated. This page also lets users manually check for updates for all compatible apps at once.

Microsoft explains that while no apps are currently using the new UOP feature, they expect adoption to grow over time. It’s being rolled out to users in the Dev and Beta channels now, with full access coming soon, and developers will receive detailed instructions shortly.

Windows updates are now quicker and more efficient, thanks to smaller downloads and faster installation, especially for big new versions. Windows 11 introduces a new system that aims to make updates even simpler, and should help keep your apps current – if app developers choose to use it.

A new platform for managing Windows 11 updates is currently being tested, but it won’t be widely available until next year, as we wait for more app developers to make their apps compatible.
