A new Wolverine movie seems to be in development. As Marvel’s current storyline, the Multiverse Saga, wraps up, they’re gearing up for a new era focused on mutants and the X-Men. Disney’s purchase of Fox in 2019 initially sparked these plans, but Marvel has since streamlined its focus towards theatrical releases, so the details have likely changed.
Marvel appears to be focusing on Wolverine as a key part of its upcoming plans for stories about mutants. Caleb Williams noticed a trademark for “Wolverine” was recently filed in the US, but hasn’t yet been registered in Europe.
A trademark for “WOLVERINE” has been filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), but it doesn’t yet appear in the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) records as of December 12, 2025. This relates to the X-Men and Marvel Studios.

Interestingly, this is how many of the titles for movies in the Multiverse Saga were first revealed to fans.
Wolverine Makes Sense for the MCU

In 2019, Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, said they weren’t planning to prioritize well-known characters. However, that was when Marvel movies were consistently successful. Now that some recent films haven’t performed as well, and Marvel is making fewer movies to protect its brand, it makes sense for them to focus on bigger names – especially from the X-Men. No X-Men character is more popular than Wolverine, both in the comics and in movies. Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine was a highlight for Fox, and he’s suggested he might appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
This new “Wolverine” trademark probably isn’t connected to Hugh Jackman himself. It’s more likely a signal that Marvel is starting to plan the first movies in a new series focusing on mutants, with Wolverine leading the way. A good strategy for Marvel would be to follow the pattern of the early Marvel Cinematic Universe, launching individual movies about different characters before bringing them together in a full “X-Men” film. While Wolverine would likely be the first movie released, other X-Men characters deserve their own spotlight, especially since they were often overlooked in favor of Wolverine during the previous films. Hopefully, that won’t happen again.
The big question everyone’s asking is who will play Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hugh Jackman was fantastic, but he didn’t look exactly like the Wolverine from the comics. Marvel might want someone who more closely resembles the character’s appearance in the original comics, which means they’ll be looking at more than just an actor’s fame.
