Stephen King’s IT tells the story of a decades-long battle against an ancient evil. A group of friends, known as the Losers Club, confront Pennywise the Clown both in their childhood and as adults. After suffering terrible hardships, the Losers succeed where others have failed – they destroy Pennywise by relying on their strong bond of love and friendship.

…Or did they?

The first season of HBO’s IT: Welcome to Derry has concluded, and the finale revealed a significant new ability of Pennywise: he can see the past, present, and future all at once. This means he knows exactly who will eventually defeat him – the Losers’ Club. Because of this knowledge, Pennywise is now trying to kill the future members of the Losers’ Club before they’re even born, or prevent their parents from having them. The series chronicles Pennywise’s efforts to eliminate the Losers’ Club’s parents and thus stop the Losers from ever being born.

In 1962, the group of friends known as the Losers’ Club successfully trapped Pennywise and sent him into a 27-year slumber. But they also discovered that the monster could reappear by targeting their ancestors in previous generations. This revelation paves the way for future seasons of Welcome to Derry, set in 1935 and 1908, and allows the entire IT story to explore completely new and unexpected areas.

How Welcome to Derry Just Set Up IT: Chapter Three

When Pennywise meets young Marge Truman, he shows her he can see all of time – the past, present, and future. He also reveals a surprising connection: Marge will be Richie Tozier’s mother, and when Richie and his friends finally defeat Pennywise, it will also be the moment Pennywise is born.

The new story, Welcome to Derry, is causing a lot of debate among fans. Stephen King’s original IT novel offered a clear and satisfying conclusion to the story of Pennywise. However, the ending of Welcome to Derry has changed that, revealing that the Losers’ Club didn’t truly defeat the evil, despite all their efforts and sacrifices.

While Welcome to Derry concludes the current story arc, it also sets up a potential third IT movie. This new film could explore Pennywise’s origins – how the creature was born, developed self-awareness, and gained power. We might see it experimenting with different forms before ultimately becoming Bob Gray and the Pennywise we know. The story could take place after the events of Chapter Two, or even use a time loop to show events from Pennywise’s distant past, similar to how the Predator prequel, Prey (2022), handled its timeline.

As a film fan, I’m really excited about the potential for Bill Skarsgård to continue playing Pennywise. It feels like we’re only scratching the surface of what he can do with the character, and he has the chance to really make it his own, even going beyond what Stephen King originally wrote. I know some hardcore King fans might not love all the changes, but honestly, more Skarsgård as Pennywise is something we can all get behind, right?
