The recent “Absolute Universe” stories explore how altering a hero’s past could change who they are at their core. In the case of “Absolute Wonder Woman,” this led to a version of the hero who wasn’t raised as an Amazon and developed magical abilities instead of focusing on combat. However, it’s now possible that her past wasn’t altered as drastically as initially believed.
The latest storyline in Absolute Wonder Woman has Diana searching for a hidden, magical labyrinth that’s now under the control of the U.S. government. She began her search when she learned one of the prisoners held there was an Amazon – a member of her people. Diana knew this Amazon belonged to a lost tribe of legendary warriors, but had never actually met anyone from that group. This was because Diana herself was imprisoned in the underworld as a baby and raised by the sorceress Circe. It’s said that Zeus banished the Amazons as punishment for turning against the gods.
Diana successfully rescued Io from the labyrinth, along with many other prisoners. But as Io stepped through the portal Diana created to return home, she disappeared in a burst of lightning. The goddess Hecate sent a signal, suggesting Io hadn’t been killed, though her fate remained unclear.
Amazons not as dead as suggested in Absolute Universe
The last few pages of Absolute Wonder Woman #12 showed what happened to Io. She was transported to a temple and reunited with Hippolyta, the Amazon queen, who thought Io was lost forever. Hippolyta was even more thrilled to learn from Io that her daughter, Diana, is still alive and on Earth.
The comic ended with a scene of Themyscira, the home of the Amazons, where bells were ringing and people were celebrating the news that one of their own had survived. This happy moment does, however, bring up questions about whether the Amazons actually exist within the larger Absolute Universe.
Earlier stories of Wonder Woman suggested the Amazonians were completely gone, erased from history. Diana learned almost everything she knew about her people from books owned by Circe and the archeologist Barbara Minerva. She believed she was the last surviving Amazon, as far as she knew they were all deceased.
A closer look at Absolute #1 Wonder Woman reveals a surprising twist. When Apollo gave baby Diana to Circe, he stated the Amazons would be eternally imprisoned after fulfilling their duty to Zeus. This implies Themyscira isn’t a paradise, but a hidden prison for the Amazons. This discovery also alters Diana’s purpose. Previously, she protected Earth while her sisters were gone. Now, it appears she’s destined to free them.
Absolute Wonder Woman #12 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
